Winter WX in Texas

I was on my way to the airport today and made a mistake by taking the freeway. I encountered moderate to severe mixed icing and freezing rain, exacerbated by me trying to used windshield washer fluid that I thought had glycol in it. Within one minute I had no forward visibility and could only see the white line out of one of the side windows by the time I took the first exit. So I rolled down the window and stuck my head out as I exited. Here I am in a BMW with California plates sticking my head out the window in an ice storm with pickups behind me with American flag stickers on them.

I ended up pulling into an entrance of a Saturn dealership and wiped the ice off with a credit card. A minute later a suburban texas plates almost hit me, but went into the other side of the entrance and started doing the same thing, so I didn't feel so bad. All that to go do ground (instead of playing in a G1000 172 because of the icing).

I had ice problems too. I just turned on the defroster and everything was cool. What killed me was how everyone was trying to drive as they normally do and slamming on there brakes on ice.:banghead: Slow dowon, drop that bad boy in low, and keep it rolling.

seriously guys quit your whining. none of you know what cold really is. three days ago it was -38 here. thankfully it has warmed up since then to a balmy -10 right now. and the sad thing is thats not even near the worst of it. you wouldnt believe how a cessna will climb when its that cold. of course you get 1000 agl, up above the inversion, and it warms up by about twenty degrees. you can actually feel the cold seeping into you as your coming in to land. anyway two things dont mess with freezing rain it will scare the s**t out of you and if you think texas is cold..........

...you win...

Slings...ew....you know a lot of drumlines dropped those things for a reason eh? I.E. They're horribly uncomfortable and your drum can project better if you get it up and put a scoop on it.

Yes, its frickin cold. At least for a socal guy like me. I just went out to my car and saw water droplets and small ice pellets falling on it... but when I touch it to wipe it off the mirror, its frozen. My first experience with freezing rain. Yeah, that would not be fun in the air. It may turn to snow by the time my flight is scheduled this afternoon, and if the cielings stay high enough to avoid icing I can fly in snow flurries for the first time. That will be an awesome exprience, especially with the G1000.

Brett.....It must be bad down there. Watching the news here in MSP last night, Texas made the 10pm newscast. They showed people pulling into gas stations and scrapping their windows with anything they had.

Yeah I know. Its more of a tradition than anything. It also really caters to the marching style. I.E. Ankle to knee. I'll PM you pictures later.

Yes! Snow! So awesome! We have like eight inches in my yard already. This is the first BIG snowfall of the year for me. I love it! Wish I could ski tonight. :(

Ah yes, can't wait to go to work tomorrow. :sarcasm:

Awesome weather here in Champaign, IL too. I just tried to drive to best buy, bad idea. The roads are pretty much no longer logical modes of transport.
