Winter WX in Texas

Yes, its frickin cold. At least for a socal guy like me. I just went out to my car and saw water droplets and small ice pellets falling on it... but when I touch it to wipe it off the mirror, its frozen. My first experience with freezing rain. Yeah, that would not be fun in the air. It may turn to snow by the time my flight is scheduled this afternoon, and if the cielings stay high enough to avoid icing I can fly in snow flurries for the first time. That will be an awesome exprience, especially with the G1000.

Yeah? Well there is eight inches of snow on the ground here. Texas weather sounds amazing right now.

Someday I may move somewhere where it is that extreme this time of year, but until then, unless I'm on a ski lift or boarding down a mountain, this is what I consider cold. I guess it takes some adjustment to be able to handle a MI winter, let alone somewhere like ND or Montanta.

I'll take cold and snow over freezing rain any freaking day, that shiz blows ass.

BTW driving home this A.M. it was -6 as reported by the AWOS outside my office window.

We just got about 5 inches, in that system that moved in from Minnieapolis (apologies to you JH...). I'm loving it though: throwing snowballs for the dog to wonder what happened to, feeding winter birds high-protien seed to keep them warm, and driving on streets that are actually cleared they way they should be, with people who actually know how to drive on ice.

BrettInLJ, I feel your pain. Texas winter is wet and biting. The precip is sporadic at best, but tends to limit itself to freezing rain and sleet, which apparently inspires the pickup-driving citizens to insanity. Wait till a good freeze and then go check the ditches, you'll see what I mean. Between the ego, the overconfidence a truck gives, and rear-wheel drive with no weight and plenty of torque, Texas tow-truck companies have a holly-jolly Christmas indeed!

Cold...you guys don't know anything about cold. It is 35 degree here in PHX this morning. And today's high is going to be 61 degrees....And of course were all freezing our butts off here right now!

:)

Well no flying for me today. My student called when I was ten minutes from the flight school to tell me that it was locked down. I guess I'll consider this a snow err...freeze day.

John , Are you strapped or harnassed in your avatar?

I have to be the one who's having the biggest climate shock right now. I'm from Atlanta and I find myself now in Minneapolis. Don't know where it is on a map? It's just south of the Artic Circle. It hasn't been above 20 all week and it was -3 degrees Fahrenheit a couple days ago!!

seriously guys quit your whining. none of you know what cold really is. three days ago it was -38 here. thankfully it has warmed up since then to a balmy -10 right now. and the sad thing is thats not even near the worst of it. you wouldnt believe how a cessna will climb when its that cold. of course you get 1000 agl, up above the inversion, and it warms up by about twenty degrees. you can actually feel the cold seeping into you as your coming in to land. anyway two things dont mess with freezing rain it will scare the s**t out of you and if you think texas is cold..........

The problem with cold in Texas is that Saturday it was 80 degrees and sunny. Today the high will be about 50 sinking into the high 20s tonight. You never have a chance to get used to the cold before it warms up again.

It is funny to see people bundled up in parkas when it's 40 outside though.

what brings you to Msp this time of year?

We use harnesses. Honestly the only college marching band that I'm fimilar with that uses slings is Ohio State and I believe that's only for pre-game? I could be talking straight out my butt, though. I can see how it might look like we've got slings, though, because the drum is kind of tilted. In all honesty it's just me not crab stepping very well. The full sized picture makes a lot more sense.

And thanks to Casey Spring Photograhpy at http://www.caseyspring.net for all the great pictures of us this year!

I love winter, but this cold weather sucks. I was in Mexico this weekend, and it was 85 degrees there. Beautiful. Last night going to hockey I walked out of the car to the building and my hands were frozen. It was like 50 feet! About 5 degrees out. Forget that.

Hey John what's the temp there in Michigan? I was talking to my girlfriend this morning, and last night going home she hit the brakes to make the turn onto her street and the car just slid right by. I guess it's pretty bad there with the ice and snow. Oh yes, looking forward to the next trip... St. Johns NewFoundland, Montreal, and Grand Rapids. Take me somewhere warm!

I got up to about 15 in Kalamazoo today. The roads all over are horrible, though. I had the same thing happen to me the other day.

For shizzle. How's CFI training going?

It's going good. Leanne is talking about scheduling my checkride before Christmas, but it may end up being in early January because of the holidays. I've only done two flights from the right seat and one in the G1000 so far though (I'll probably be taking that one to the FSDO for the checkride).

I was on my way to the airport today and made a mistake by taking the freeway. I encountered moderate to severe mixed icing and freezing rain, exacerbated by me trying to used windshield washer fluid that I thought had glycol in it. Within one minute I had no forward visibility and could only see the white line out of one of the side windows by the time I took the first exit. So I rolled down the window and stuck my head out as I exited. Here I am in a BMW with California plates sticking my head out the window in an ice storm with pickups behind me with American flag stickers on them.

I ended up pulling into an entrance of a Saturn dealership and wiped the ice off with a credit card. A minute later a suburban texas plates almost hit me, but went into the other side of the entrance and started doing the same thing, so I didn't feel so bad. All that to go do ground (instead of playing in a G1000 172 because of the icing).

Dude...were you driving a car or flying a plane! :p Apparently, the wx portion of your training is going pretty good.
