Winter Weather

Hi...
This probably seems like a strange question for those of you from cold weather climates. However, being a Californian a cold day to me means 45 degrees (above Zero, that is.) I plan on starting at UND next fall. Any suggestions as to what kind of clothes are really necessary....boots, long underwear???, North Face type jackets warm enough, etc. Just trying to figure out what I REALLY need. It would probably be best to buy the stuff there in Grand Forks....altho you can get some good deals around here at REI and the North Face Outlet. Not sure what they sell here would be warm enough for there.

Any comments appreciated. Thanks!

Im from GA and my freshman year I was fortunate enough to experience -75 windchill and -40 ambient.

This is what I did to protect myself:
Go to Wilson's Leather and buy yourself a heavy leather jacket with a removable liner. I have had mine for more then 2 years and it cant be beat. Youy will need a scarf. You will need some good gloves (Wilson's Leather). You will need some good boots. You will need some heavy socks.

First and foremost, dont be a dumbass. You might see some of the indiginous people outside with no jacket or just a sweatshirt, just remember that you arent a local (be glad you arent).

Well it's 35 degrees right now I think and I'm wearing a light jacket - I'm getting used to the cold. But yes, once it starts getting cold you will need a thick winter jacket. Those Columbia jackets with a liner is what I'm going to buy soon - those are supposed to work good. A North Face jacket is nice too. As for boots, yes people recommend thick soled boots here. I will be going to Target for those because I can't afford anything more expensive. Gloves and a sock cap is must... I shall see how I fair this winter coming from California.

I love the cold and snow, but -75 is just insane. It gets that cold up there?!

I'm considering UND and it is my first choice, but I don't know if I could take that kind of weather. Winter coats, scarves, gloves, and boots? All I have is a light windbreaker and some tennis shoes.

If it's going to be that friggin cold, there has to at least be something to do outside. Are there any mountains or ski hills around?

Bah, dont let the cold deter you. If you arent stupid about things, you will be fine. I highly recommend Wilson's Leather. I bought a leather bomber there and that thing keeps me warm. Only downside was that it was 200 bucks. Well worth it though. There are some really cool cold weather tricks that you can do like throwing a cup of boling water strait up and not having it come back down...

No, absolutely no skiing or mountains around here. North Dakota is FLAT and boring!

No, probably the viadock to school on Columbia!!

OK, so it's cold, flat, and boring. It's near Minnesota, so I thought that there would at least be some good hockey or skiing. How far is the nearest major city?

Maybe I should just go to Illinois or Eastern Michigan.

Depends on what your definition of a city is. Fargo has a little over a 100,000 people now. If your talking big city Minneapolis is about 4 hrs.

We do have hockey, but I think skiing is out of the question. The next "major" city would be Minneapolis/St. Paul, about a 4-5 hr. drive from Grand Forks. Fargo has a little more to offer than Grand Forks (e.g. strip clubs

).

Fargo is actually pretty fun. It's only a 50 minute drive south. They have a nice mall somewhat comparable to most major cities. They pretty much have all the good franchise restaurants found in the West coast... eg, TGI Fridays, Chili's, Olive Garden, Bennigan's... I have yet to make it over to Minneapolis, but I can't wait until I see the Mall of America. Plus the have IKEA there - pretty cool store if you are on a budget and need cheap furniture for your place.

C'mon man, if I did the transition from NYC to this dump of G-Forks, then I'm sure you can too. Come here for the flying disregarding the rest. You'll get used to it...well sort of. But still, I'm very content with the decision to have came here.

You'll find something to do eventually. I'm currently writing from a computer here at the International Center. (Yes, I'm quite bored) But hey! They have free hot chocolate. =) =) =)

Yeeup, coming from San Diego I don't regret moving here. I have so much fun with the flying that it makes up for the lack of things to do here.
