Winter Flying in the Northeast

This goes back to Dec. 26; it was a flight from Providence, RI (PVD) to Rutland, VT (RUT) and back in a Cessna 152. It was my first time back in the C152 in months, and I actually enjoyed getting back to the basics of navigation, where my finger on my sectional consisted of my "moving map," and my watch gave me my GS and ETE.

About a month later, I was still shy of 250 TT and felt like going someplace far; despite having completed the 300 n.m. solo cross-country requirement back in August. So, I strapped myself into the Gutless Cutlass and flew from PVD to the Bay Bridge Airport (W29) in Stevensville, MD. I also made two stops on the way out: The first was unplanned; I landed at Republic (FRG) in Farmingdale, NY (east of JFK, west of ISP) to use the lav. The second was planned; I stopped at Delaware Airpark (33N) just to say I've landed in DE as well. This shows landings and takeoffs at 33N and W29:

The camera is a Canon PowerShot S3 IS, which I mounted to the glareshield using this and this together.

Nice footage. W29 is on my list of airports to visit this summer while time building. Looks like a fun approach and landing.

Great post, I am trying to get the boss, read wife, to let me get a 152 so I can commute to work in it and build some time.

Nice video, thanks, I've been wanting to head up to KLEB and just follow the Conn River all the way back down to the coast, figured it would be a nice flight..........anyway; have you taken the Comm ride yet?
I'll be going up soon with RC, not sure if he does PVD (think he's SFZ and Eastern Mass) but if you did then any kind of info would be greatly apreciated!!

It's worth a stop! The scenery was fantastic; I would've liked to spend more time there. I was playing with SkyVector.com one day looking for ideas, and didn't regret it! Be advised though, there was moderate bird activity on the field when I was there. I didn't see anything while in the air, but while on the ramp I saw several flocks of Canada geese fly over, as well as plenty of seagulls, and I saw a departing twin Cessna almost take out (or get taken out by) a hawk. They do have simple noise abatement procedures at the airport's web site, too.

Sounds like a good time... a twist on the old "IFR" joke; but "I Follow Rivers" instead of "Roads." :) Where do you fly out of? I haven't taken the checkride yet; I've been in procrastination mode in regards to the written... I've been terrible. My private and instrument rides were with GB; he's pretty legendary in the RI area but up there in age, and I don't know how much longer he'll be doing it. Good luck, though!

Nice videos, I instructed out of 33N for along time. I used to fly up there every day for school. They have cut down a massive amount of trees on final for 9 there. The trees used to come right up to the begining of the runway.

Alex.

I fly out of PYM - you should bang out the written in no time, I got a Gleim CD with the question bank (saved a lot of time vs the books), did that for maybe 2/3 nights and got 96 - it's a walk in the park.

Thanks for the advice. Looking on airnav it says to join downwind for 29 over the water tower, looking on google earth I cant find it.

I hear they have a goood restaurant just off the field also.

It's funny you should say that because I searched satellite imagery desperately to find it, but couldn't. You'll see it when you get there though; if you land RWY 29 it'll be a slightly wider pattern than you otherwise might fly.
