WINGS Program..

Has anyone here participated in the FAA Wings program, either as a pilot or an instructor? They are having one down in Tullahoma on May 22nd and I've volunteered my services. I figure it's a pretty good way to begin giving back to the aviation community and meet lots of people in the mid-state.

For those that Participated as pilots, what types of things were you looking for from your instructor? Were you there to get another "check in the box", or were you seeking real improvements in your performance?

For those that participated as instructors, what exactly did you work on? It seems that AC 61-91H is a little vague, but I suppose that's a good thing, leaving the majority of the training to the discretion of the student and the instructor.

Any input??

I participated as a pilot. I was working on my commerial license and I wasn't really looking for an improvement in my flying outside of getting my next ticket. I did get a lot out of the safety seminar. I shadowed a controller at Orlando Executive. It was a great learning experience.

As an instructor, I've had a couple of my students go through the program with me. Most of them plan on becoming professional pilots one day, so they we looking to have Wings as a check in the box. Some of my older students were looking at learning new ways to fly and shake off some rust. If you spend the time with someone it can be much more useful than a flight review. I know there's no ground required in Wings, but if I see someone with a problem I'm going to show them how to fix it on the ground. You can also incorporate many things (airspace, regs, systems, etc...) into the 3 hours of training required with Wings.

I try to do the WINGS thing once a year. Last year it worked out nicely. My instructor and I just dropped it in with my IFR training. Looks like I'll be able to do the same thing with my Commercial this year. For the seminar, I shadowed a control at KORL, too. Not sure what I'll do this year. I'm trying to stay away from boring lecture seminars. They had one a while back that was using an E6-B that counted. I was going to take the KLN-94 class, but it got cancelled.

I've never done it before but I'm instructing at one this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

By the way, I once dated a girl from Tullahoma. I love southern women.
