Windy in the North East

I'm not sure about any of you guys but I'm just about sick of how windy it has been up here in the North East the past few weeks. I'm instructing out of KPOU in New York. It seems like everyday from about 9am till 3pm the winds are gusting in the twentie's or even higher. Not that I'm complaining about a rough ride but it has just been a pain trying to get students out on solo cross countries and to bring students up on their first few lessons. Unfortunately half of my students fly 152's so that is even more fun. I'm not sure if this was a worthy post but I'm just wondering how everyone else in this part of the country is dealing with it. Hopefully after March the winds die down. If I remember correctly last summer when I started CFI'ing it seemed to always be dead calm. I can't wait for those days again. Hope your rides have been more enjoyable.
 
same problem here in rhode island. a few of my student pilots havent flown in a few weeks, but at least they are pretty good when it comes to cross wind landings with all the practice. today was a little gusty, but i try to have them go to airports with runways that are close in relation to the wind. turbulance has been a little bit of an issue too, which makes it hard for them to concentrate.
the winds should die down soon.... just in time for the april showers.
 
It was terribly windy here in Haines, Alaska also lately. There appears to be about of dust everywhere:) .
 
I have been having the same problems here in Colorado. We have had wind consistantly in the 20s gusting to the 30s since November. It really makes it hard to teach slow flight and other basics. I don't mind flying through this stuff and landing in it since it tends to blow right down the pipe of our main runway but trying to teach basics in it is totally different. I like for my students to get a little exposure to the wind but I want them to learn how to do the maneuvers correctly too. When it is windy and bumpy like this, they really don't get much out of it and I end up flying the plane alot. The scary thing is that from time to time we will get winds that pick up well over 50 kts at the surface. I would hate to be caught up in that stuff.

One thing to check for is to look for pireps, adds has a great java tool for pireps that is helpful. I have found that somedays we may have winds blowing pretty good around the surface but it can be totally smooth up top... Then again we had some the other day where it was calm at the surface but a Convective Sigmet popped up and it got really nasty up top.

Better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.
 
Agreed! Here in Annapolis, MD it has been gusting 25-30 all day every day. We train Naval Academy students that have 60 days to solo or their military flying career is over!!

I would hit mother nature but i'm afraid she would hit back harder...
 
60 days huh? If that was the case, I would just take them up right as it was starting to get dark. Usually it calms down by then and you get to log night landings thus also knocking out those night hours and the night landing requirements. Sort of two birds with one stone kind of thing. Early mornings work too I guess?

I take it you fly out of NAFC there? How do you like that? I was thinking of applying there a few months ago when they were hiring but the drive was just too far for me to to do it.
 
Yup, just about everyday here in NH for the last few weeks. I don't make much money that way. :(
 
So I guess it's not just me then. I hate to speak to soon but so far it's looking like the next couple of days might be ok. In fact at the end of the week here in NY they're talking about maybe up into the sixties. Might even be a chance to get in the clouds.
 
It's been a little easier to tolerate for me ... our (flying club's) Warrior has been away for its annual.
 
I've had about 8 days straight until today of non-flying because of the winds near Philadelphia. The first few days I got in some ground, but once that was out of the way it was straight cxls due to wx. :(

So i went super geeky (way more than I could've ever imagined) and bought an online game (with a headset to chat with other online geeks) and holed up for a day or two eating pizza. Not as much fun as flying, but I didn't feel like doing taxes or logbook stuff.
