Will Legacy hire pilot without an ATP?

Hi all, I am currently 17 with about 130 hours, got my PPL and about halfway through my IFR. I was considering taking the ATP course but thought that it might be a waste of time if I cannot use the hours I get for another 6 years when I get my ATP. So to my question, if I have the hours, but no ATP, can I still be hired by a legacy airliner? Thanks, captain

hope that made sense :D

Don't take an atp course with 130 hrs. Remember you need 1500 hours before you can even apply for the certificate. Most pilots get their ATP paid for by their employer after a few years at an entry level 135 or 121 job. But to answer the original question, no. Most of the legacy carriers require an ATP as a condition of employment. Don't get ahead of yourself. Take things one step at a time. Good luck.

I was going to do the same thing.... Take the written, and just get it done. Plus I'd be the only guy around (including the CFIs) that would have done his ATP written lol :D

Also between the time between now and the time you turn 23, get your college degree or else I doubt any major would call you back unless you have excellent connections.

Good luck!

This is a question I have been meaning to ask aswell. I should, hopefully, be over the mins at most majors by the time I am 21. It looks like a few airlines (Delta, Continetal, Northwest) only require the written to have been taken. Southwest requires the ATP, it does not seem like it is just a prefrence as they even say the minimum age for the job is 23 (the age requirment for the ATP).

Alex.

SWA also requires 1000 TPIC, which you would more than likely need an ATP to get. There are ways of getting it without the ATP, but they are few and far between. The other majors, keep in mind that those are MINIMUM requirements. The other guys applying for the same job are gonna have thousands of hours of TPIC time. I've got my app in at Delta, CAL and NWA with 2200/1500 and almost 1300 TSIC, and the phone ain't ringing.

I think the youngest guy that was hired at CAL was 24.

Denny might still be the youngest DL pilot, and he's 26?

The way CAL does their relief flying (3 pilot crews) the FO's have to maintain a 1st class medical and I assume ATP for the IACO rules. This applies to all fleets, so I think you'd have to be 23 for CAL.

A few timesin history, there were some 23 year old DAL new hires, but not in the last few hiring cycles.

There's a couple younger now I think, I'll have a check!

I have to maintain a 1st class and I'm just an FO! But I think the way the FOM is written, if you're in the international category, you've got to have a current 1st class and a PIC type.

You are certainly right. There will always be a few people who are lucky enough to fly a turbine prior to 23. I think there is another kid my age here who is currently right seat in a 1900 and is trying to get to a frieght place to build TPIC. If everything stays the same as it is now (doubtful of course) I should be around 3400TT and 1400TPIC by the time I am 21. Again that is if nothing changes, which is rare in corporate aviatoin. Like you said, this will probally not even be competitve for most majors, but I would be interested to know if they would even consider me or not because of my age. What OldTownPilot said above is interesting and maybe the kicker.

And at CAL even the 737 does 3-pilot stuff on Caribbean turns.

Even if you were hired at 23 you'd be the #1 CA when you retired. I don't think thats too bad. And at the rate CAL is upgrading guys you could be a 737 CA at 25. It's running at 2.5 years right now. The next 737 CA class will have guys that was hired in June of '05, just after they restarted hiring.

Listen to grandpa Seggy.
Seriously, college was the best time of my life.
I don't know what your chances are of getting on with a major all your time is part 91 regardless of your age.

Just out of curiosity, when the captain is resting does the "FO in command" get to log PIC time?
