Why wear the monkey suit?

The reality is many jobs have uniforms. Some are official some are less so. Bankers and attorneys wear suits, MD's wear lab coats, pilot's wear stripes, the military has its uniform, etc. It's all about image and identification. As was mentioned earlier, how is an airline pilot expected to start the process of rounding up 150 passengers after an evacuation if he/she looks exactly like the guy sitting in 24C? Who is in charge of a chaotic situation? Yes, studies still show that the public cares about pilot uniforms. There's a reason why Southrnjets has theirs, SWA pilot's wear hats in TV commercials, and "the New American" is bringing back the hat. Image is part of product. Product now matters. Image has always mattered.

You have to look like a professional to be treated like a professional. Nothing wrong with being a gas station attendant but what do you think would eventually happen to pilots if we wore blue shirts with "Capt Bill" and "FO Rick" on them? Wear your uniform with pride, dignity, and class. Don't let others strip you of your professionalism. It's no coincidence that the sloppiest dressed pilots out there are often the sloppiest.... You know where I'm going. Flame away "FO Rick"

Don't forget double-breasted jackets. We're going there, too. However, we're bringing "nipple buttons" back into style!

Truthfully, the presence/absence of a hat is about #7 on the list of "Things I worry about when it comes to the appearance of regional airline pilots."

It's more a non-specific directive, at least where I was raised, to look sharp.

Actually, more doctors wear just scrubs now a days in a hospital setting. Nurses do the same.

The lab coat thing is mostly Hollywood, just like its insistence that Nurses still wear all white and the pointy hat.
 
Disagree with the original premise. Wear your uniform proudly, neatly pressed and well-tailored. I say it DOES impact the way others see you, you view yourself, subconsciously, and how you perform your job.

Proviso: 4 years USAF, a long time ago - when I learned to shine my shoes, a uniform to answer a phone when no one ever sees me these days, and as a guy that will wear a tie to go out to dinner alone.

I say looks, and the way you carry yourself generally matters. But I'm not a pilot and, of course, your mileage may vary.

Ehh, depends on the sector of aviation that you're flying.

My employer thinks it makes a difference, signs my paycheck so, well, I can wear the uniform they way bossman says, or go buy my own airbus and fly it dressed how I'd like.

But I can't do both.

Follow the companies uniform policy. It's not an option.

and to stay on topic:
I have a long list of reasons I don't work for an airline.
Having to wear that hat is in the top ten. (Pay rate are the other 9 in the top 10)
I'd rather wear the monkey suit shown above. :)

My old man was old school. Lab coats unless he was going in or out of surgery then scrubs. Beside the point though. Whatever your uniform is just wear it right.
