Why is TSA hiring so many?

Can anybody speculate as to why TSA is hiring so many? Some that are in current newhire classes care to elaborate? I know people may be bailing out of there due to the whole Gojets thing, but serioiusly they are on a mission to hire new FOs.

Nobody is showing up to class. People who call to tell them they won't come to class get asked "What will it take to get you into training."

They've offered to pay for a hotel in training (can we laud progress?!) to those who said it was an obstacle to come to TSA, but they *still* aren't getting many bites.

Holy crap! I didnt know they didnt pay for hotels while in training! What do they expect?? Of course people wont show up if they cant figure out somewhere to stay for 2 months. Geez. I've got 3 interviews soon and they are one of them. But does that still answer why they're hiring sooo many? Are they growing? I doubt it...

They're aggresively looking for FO's because of the GoJets issue. TSA is shrinking and GoJets is growing plus has a shorter upgrade time. Then there is the ever present danger of furlough from TSA.

Hey Chris you should interview with TSA!

They probably have high attrition among FO's, so while they are not growing (say thank you to GoJetz) they have high turnover.

WTF do they expect if they dont pay for a hotel. I cant believe they ever got anybody to staff that place to begin with if they dont pay for a hotel.

There are still a few regionals out there (heck, and mainline/LCC carriers) that don't pay for a hotel during training. It's not as rare as you would think.

simple answer:
High Attrition, and people jumping ship to go to other regionals.

Lots of FO's are quitting and going over to skywest or expressjets. And St Louis and Richmond Domicile's DEFINTLEY are not appealing at all to anyone, so people are moving over to other regionals.

I was just at a party with a bunch of TSA people. The basic attitude seems to be the same as it would at any other company. Since the pay isn't that high, nobody has anything good to say about that.:(

I basically asked the same question as the subject of this thread and the answer seemed to revolve around the boss and scheduling. Believe it or not, I never once even thought of bringing up GJ and don't recall hearing anything mentioned about them. My uneducated opinion is that TSA is a relatively small, nearly forgotten feeder that is suffering what many other airlines are. People are just looking for something else, hoping for an improvement and TSA is succombing to too many people leaving for them to keep up. It's not just happening there:

I personally know of another regional that as recently as early September sent out a message to the pilots that they had no plans of hiring any time soon and a couple weeks later (with Captains suddenly manning FO seats) sent out a "we need to fill two classes" message.

When was looking for a new job, I was introduced to a Captain at SkyWest and was working on getting a recommendation from him. He gave me a very unhappy description of the company. Yes! You get that even at SkyWest!

This is not an easy time for a difficult industry. You should be safe if your plans for TSA don't exceed what's left on their contract. Other than that, you can't be sure until you get there. Just remember, there will always be people that are very unhappy and they will make life seem hopeless.

So, Ford. You still going to TSA? :)

To me, today's TSA looks like yesterday's PCL. We had the same problem with FOs jumping ship to other regionals, corporate, etc, then it all came to a screeching halt. Reserve times shot up to about 6-7 months in MEM when it was around 2 months (BTW, that nightmare is now over for me, held a line in Dec, and my "build up" line in Jan netted me 90+ hours of flying as well). We had classes getting cancelled left and right. Then, suddenly, FOs were getting hired like mad, and no one knew why since the company was talking about losing flying without a pilot contract. Low and behold, we get more flying with NWA, and the day it's announced, openings for 32 CAPTAINS come up as well. Moral of the story, only airline management knows what's going on in the hiring dept, and often they don't have a clue either....

FOs are in demand because of attrition. Right now, RIC has the most need. As of the last bid pack, there were 51 FOs over there, 50 lines, and 1 buildup lines. They send us (STL) guys over there to sit reserve for four days because they have no reserve coverage. Turnover is high because management worker relationship is terrible. A lot of people get hired, go through training, and quit to go to another airline soon after.

Our contract has been under negotiations for 13 months or so and we haven't gotten anything done. We just recently called for mediation and the company cancels the rest of the negotiation sessions. They also claim that we are in concessionary times. Its going to come down the wire again.
