Why is there such a massive discrepency in fuel prices? (100LL)

Uh...yes, actually, it is, along with a Congress willing to give carte blanche on the black budget and to the drug companies, it is. ;)

Unbelievably poor treatment received at Signature Flight Support nationwide when we pull up in our Twin Bonanza.

Atlantic, on the other hand, seems happy to see me regardless.
I actually think Signature is getting better. They're trying. Landmark is mailing it in and charging you an assload at the same time. Leaving out single FBO airports I actually don't mind signature anymore.

Here in OMA, many of the aircraft owners I know who have their aircraft based at a certain airport will fly that aircraft 20 miles away from 100LL that is over a dollar cheaper.

I'll never forget buying gas at MKC for 3.90 just three short years ago. I couldn't believe it

I was making a reservation with Atlantic at KJAN two weeks ago and they offered to get me a rental through Enterprise. "Sure," I said as I pulled up the Enterprise Web site. Atlantic quoted a rate that was 3x Enterprise's rate for the same car. "No thanks."

They all have their faults, but while their front-line service may have improved (it would be hard for it to get worse), I'll bet Signature still has their absolutely extortionate ramp/fuel price structure.

Nope nope nope nope!

Had to look up the FBO I remember spending the most at ($8.00+ for jet fuel back in '08)...Signature in Savanah, GA.

That was the weekend Aloha folded...flew back home that Monday and decided to shelf my 'jetcareer' plans for a while

I think I've gotten screwed one way or another, by accident or not, every time I've gotten a rental through an FBO.

It probably isn't the FBO that is gouging you for gas.

The cities and Airport Authorities that own the airport look at fuel as a money maker. A perfect one at that, because voters could care less what rich folk pay to fill up their fat cat jets.

When they negotiate the lease for the FBO (or put out an RFP), it usually has contractual language that they want so many dollars per gallon pumped. So, $3.50/gal + $4 the city takes off the top plus $0.50 for the FBO, and there you have $8 AvGas.

Local businesses on the field can often negotiate a price break (we do), especially if you are employing people (no politician likes newspaper articles about jobs disappearing)

On the flipside, middle of nowhere airports will have cheap gas, and be happy with all the jet traffic that brings in. And fills restaurants/hotel beds/justifies more AIP money/etc

There are city owned 100LL pumps around my area that are subsidized. The city budgets have line items that knock some cost off. They're cheap.

There are also city owned pumps like in KFSM that are run by idiots and are expensive.

Funny that you say that, I'm in FSM right now and the ATIS said something about self serve fuel

Signature has made a huge turnaround on their pricing, at least from what I have seen. I don't know all of the details, but we are on a new (within the last year) charter rate program that now has them very, very competitive in price on fuel, and waives those nasty fees. Most places we go we now choose Signature based on price alone. <say what???!?!!!> Very aggressive pricing, I must say.

Probably a relatively short term development as they're trying to drive the competition out, but I'm perfectly happy to take advantage of some really good pricing while they're doing it.

Maybe this is one of the reasons that Bill Christiansen lost in his bid for Tulsa Mayor last year.
I went onto his campaign Facebook page and educated the followers about his MASSIVE OSHA violation/fine back in 2005. The man treats his employees like pieces of chit. THe whole family does for the most part.
