Why is One-Way Usually More Expensive?

Hello All,

My friend and I were wondering why usually it seems that one-way airline tickets are more expensive than roundtrip. Is there any particualr reason for this?

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Its because the airlines know that if you're going somewhere oneway, you more than likely absolutely have to go and will pay whatever they ask. That's one of the reasons anyway.

Same reason why a company will discount if you order in bulk. Same reason why companies can afford "buy 2, get the third one free".

I was surprised when I was searching for flights to FLL, it was cheaper to book 2 one-way tickets then to buy one round-trip ticket.

Ball bearings.... it's all ball bearings these days, didn't you hear?

It categorizes passengers, multi city, day trippers are likely to be business travelers - and businesses can afford to pay a lot more.

if a round trip is cheaper cant you just purchase it for round trip and not show up for the return leg?

Yep!! That's what Lloyd does!

Yes, indeedy-do: because they've got only one leg to extract their pound of flesh instead of two. It's like paying off a loan; payments are applied to accrued interest before being applied to principal--they're going to get their fixed profit out of you right off the top. The return leg is close to a "gimme".

It's to encourage you to come back. If everybody just flew one way, when you got there the crews would be just sitting around saying "well now what do we do?"

Dude, don't do it on CoEx or CAL. They've trained us to spot that. If you read the tiny letters on the contract of carriage (inside that nifty ticket jacket we shove in your face for a reason, you just don't know it), we can legally cancel your whole trip for that. They even give cash bonuses to people that catch pax doing it. Not sure about the other airlines, though. Doesn't hurt my profitsharing on those guys, so knock yourself out.

You're going to have a hard time proving that I don't intend on comming back and that I'm only using the first leg.
I've done it before (not on these airlines) with no trouble.

Something really crazy I did once. Roundtrip ticket from France to FL were extremely cheap, while round trip from FL to France were expensive as heck. I bought two round trip tickets from france, used the return leg from my first "round trip" ticket and the first leg on my second ticket. It worked just fine.
The ticket lady at the airport was very confused however.

I'd suppose if you were stupid enough to say something to the effect that you're skipping the next leg they'd do something about it. Also if you have a round trip ticket and you skip the second leg on the flight going out I'd imagine in today's age of computers they'd realize you're a no show and cancel the return portion of your trip.

It's kind of a shady way to go because they could conceivably sell the seat you're taking up but not using to someone else for more than you paid. I guess you could say it's their opportunity cost.

I told the sales woman about it (I was hoping that I'd just get the same price and be done with it, but I was "forced" to buy two round trip tickets)

There is absolutly nothing shady about it. They offer a service and I bought it. If they were smart, being the same company, they would align their prices (specially when you end up on the same seats).

I don't think they can not let you fly the return leg. You've bought the service. You could have simply missed your flight, have been sick and taken another one... That's why now we are forced to "comfirm" our tickets.

Probably being very similar to being 'forced' to purchase a #2 value meal at McDonalds to save cash compared to simply purchasing a Big Mac, a coke and leaving out the fries.

British Airways don't seem to mind. I'd flown to Moscow with them on a return ticket, only to find I needed to come back a week earlier than I'd booked.
They couldn't change the ticket, so I had to buy another one. The single was twice or was it threetimes as expensive, so I bought a new return (I remember saying one-way at that price I'd expect to be seated in 1st class - she actually laughed!), and then she said, are you going to use the return half - I said no, so once I'd bought it, she just marked it up on the system as a no show - cancellation!!

hesaded to me. Whoever invented airline ticket pricing ought to be shot or at least

Why can't they just do it nice and simple like flybe does. Cheap prices - bookable online - and you buy each leg separately.
At least make the one-way equal in price to the return, not more expensive, that's daft.

GRRRRR!!!!!! Makes me hopping

How about cellphone pricing? Prepaying for minutes you don't even use.

Or traffic ticket pricing? Don't have $.50 for parking? Here's an $85 ticket!

Bank service fee pricing? bounce a check and even though you obviously haven't any cash in the account, you're charged up to $60.

Photo processors? Some of the photos don't come out but you're still paying for them...

Coupon pricing at Sweet Tomatoes. It's about $9 with a drink, but if you run outside and tear open a USAToday and bring a sliver of paper inside, suddenly the price is about $5 for lunch and a drink.

Internet pricing! It's $21 for Earthlink dialup at 56K but my cable company charges $39 even though it's like 30x faster than dialup.

Wal Mart! Cheap toothpaste, but then you're spending more tax dollars on a state and local level because they don't offer the average employee health benefits.
