Why is it.... "Leather Seating?"

Why in the world do airlines crow about "X by X All Leather Seating"?

Do pilots sit around the lounge and say "Hey, my Saab has 1x2 seating.../Yeah, but my ATR's got 2x2 all-leather seating so kiss it!"

Or

"Hon, we've got a great fare on Airline A and guess what?! They have 2x3 all-leather seating in the MD-80! But our butts are going to sweat because they're too cheap to crank up the packs!"

Well, it's not like they're using a top-grain, high-quality leather or anything! :)

Just thought I'd ask because I find it a little doofus.
 
Leather seats feel a lot more comfortable then most other fabrics.. And it would be expensive to outfit each seat with the sheepskin or whatever that they have up front :)

So its a plus for the pax

If they were regional guys, it'd be "Hey, my Ford Fiesta has leather seating" :D

My '83 Blazer has grade A naughahyde seating.
 
I really don't even prefer the leather seats.

They are not cleaned enough and often times it feels sticky as I put my head back onto it. All I do with the hot towels when non-revving in business class is wipe off everything on my seat that is leather, plus the entertainment remote and stuff.

I think if they were very clean I would like them, but too clean and then they get that slippery feel and I hate that. I like how the cloth seat keeps you in place.
 
Leather upholstr-errr, seats wear better and last longer than cloth seats which makes them less expensive in thelong run

Plus, leather is easier to keep clean, should that ever happen.

Frankly, I prefer the cloth seats on long flights. The leather tends to make me sweat more.
 
I hate leather seats. I would guess they brag it up as more of a marketing thing. Leather is perceived as more high end.
 
3 hours in an rj with leather seats is just a pure luxury most of us peasants can't believe we are able to experience.

Maybe the Delta crowd could answer that question. NWA had 2-3 year old interiors that were not leather in all the Airbuses. Now they look like smurfs were murdered and skinned by Ed Gien. Why does Delta like wasting money on leather?

leather costs less than cloth over the life of the plane.

Using pleather a money saver in the long run. It's easy to clean and lasts longer than cloth. Cloth seats are a pain to clean/keep clean and have to be disposed of when they get nasty....and they do get pretty nasty! Pleather doesn't soak up liquids versus having pax sit in soggy seats.

You know the hot towels are made hot with that disgusting potable water, right? Hardly a disinfectant.

Better than cleaning your face, though, like most of the pax do.

Potable means "suitable for drinking".

I understand it's not a a chemical disinfectant, but I'm not quite following the "disgusting" part.

I spent 3 days in bed not eating due to a potable water tank that had the creepy-crawlies in it.

That was after the water was boiled through the coffee pot.

Not that I have a stomach of tissue paper either, I've drank lake water for a week when we go camping in the BWCA.

If you have a tank on any of the jets you fly, check out the require lab results when they come back.
 
Hawker wrote a monthly "cleaning" requirement into the maintenance manual for the water tanks. Bleach in the tank, followed by baking soda to knock out the bleach.

Every 30 days.
 
Ever since I worked the ramp in BGR I have NEVER drank the water or coffee out of an airplane. And I LOVE coffee.

I think you are better not washing your hands with lav water than getting that filth all over your hands.
