Why don't airlines offer an employee stock purchase plan or a Stock option plan?

Seems simple enough right? If employees have a stake in the company then there would be an interest in doing a better job. Probably save a bunch of fuel and improve on-time performance at a minimum. The next best thing to an employee owned buisness. So why don't they offer it?
I am sorry, and no offense meant, but this really made me laugh. Ask the employees at UAL how that worked out for them in the end when they were made "owners" and how they were promised that their futures would be secure. Ask them what happened to their pensions. Ask them what happened with their pay cuts. Ask them what happened with the lay-offs and furloughs. The employees have no real control, believe me. It doesn't matter how many pay cuts they take or how many are laid off, or how the employees kill themselves to improve customer relations or build up the airline as a whole and how much they sacrifice. The management will do what it does and keep paying themselves outrageous amounts of money and making terrible decisions and lying, while their pension trust and bonuses go untouched, no matter what. Never forget that. "The employee-owners of United invite you to fly the friendly skies with us." My ass.

When I read the thread title, the first thing I thought of was UALs ESOP program, and how it went from something to nothing in a short time, sadly.

Must be my night. First I see the thread about Lacy and almost lost my dinner. Then I saw this thread, practically fell outta my chair and started ranting to my wife. lol

Wait, you want to own a part of an airline?
