Who Thought This Was A Good Idea?

Terrible ADM for the SWA pilots. We have the AF/ANG that can deal with NORDO BS. Putting a 121 jetliner in close proximity to a NORDO is ludicrous!

Worth noting, it’s in the video link, but this is from 2011.

I was wondering if this was a different incident or the one that happened years ago. For some reason I thought the one that happened years ago occurred over the Gulf of Mexico.

Now that it’s brought up again I wonder what happened to the crew. Seems like the intentions were good but not well thought through.

Ill advised, yes. But really the operational error (on the ATC side) only occurred because the phraseology "maintain visual separation from that Cirrus" was never used. I imagine the SWA crew violated multiple company policies.

I may have heard it wrong, did not re-listen.
When I watched it I was thinking, "what the heck are you thinking, moving them down to same altitude to go look?'

The SWA approached from below at 10k and when they got the cirrus in sight were cleared back to 11 and told to maneuver as necessary. They were never told to maintain visual. It's semantics but that is what would have gotten the controllers.

I highly doubt the controller was suspended for this. Personally I probably would have stopped SW at 11,500 or 10,500 until they got the cirrus in sight.

Don’t read the comments on YouTube.

I decided to re-listen, Maybe I'm missing something or I should have kept listening,
that part that got me the first time is just after the 1:00
guy controller tells SWA decend to 11,000 then says nordo is solid at 11,000 as he's describing where to look for them

Then when they’re 5 miles away he descends them to 10. They get them in sight at the same time .
