Who gives a type rating?

I will be getting my initial type rating, and currently have a CSEL and CMEL with CFIA/CFII. After the initial "25 hour mentor" period has elapsed, what else is required for me to begin giving instruction in that A/C that I was typed in? I have been reading the regs and not seeing anything helpful.

You'll need a category and class rating on your CFI certificate to go along with the category and class on the type rating.

If it's a multi-engine airplane, you'll need a multi-engine rating on your CFI certificate. Other than that, you're good to go legally.

Insurance? Might be different.

After posting reread what I believe you referred to.
§ 61.195 Flight instructor limitations and qualifications.

A person who holds a flight instructor certificate is subject to the following limitations:
(b) Aircraft ratings. A flight instructor may not conduct flight training in any aircraft for which the flight instructor does not hold:
(1) A pilot certificate and flight instructor certificate with the applicable category and class rating; and
(2) If appropriate, a type rating.

But I read farther and notice paragraph (e) of the the same 61.195
and it reads

(e) Training in an aircraft that requires a type rating. A flight instructor may not give flight training in an aircraft that requires the pilot in command to hold a type rating unless the flight instructor holds a type rating for that aircraft on his or her pilot certificate.

Im trying to read it as written with minimal gray thinking, but it seems paragraph (e) says a CFI needs to be typed in the A/C he wished to type someone in. I am thinking that typing maybe different then traditional certificates, and hopefully I can avoid getting my MEI for the time being.

Gotta have the MEI.

Type ratings are placed on pilot certificates, so you don't have to have a "CFI Type" or anything like that. It doesn't exist.

:yeahthat: Definitely call up the insurance company to make sure you meet their requirements, they are often more stringent than FAA requirements in my experience. I haven't had to do this with type ratings but when talking about various aerobatic and tailwheel aircraft the insurance was always far more stringent than the FAA with requirements.

I was shocked to find out I could "instruct" the new FO straight out of the sim. Of course, I had a bit of experience in the plane, but still...surprised the crap out of me.

.....yet I wasn't insurable in the Travelair to do initial multi-engine rating instruction. :rotfl:
