Whistling Death

I have never heard the whistle before. Anybody know what causes it? My pure guess would be the shape of the wings but I have no idea.

If I win the lottery I'm buying two F-4s: one with a radial that whistles and one with J79s that screams!

The Corsair's distinctive sound, which earned it among the Japanese the nick-name of "Whistling Death", partly because of the engine sound, that was caused by the wing-root inlets for engine air. Shown above is Maj. Gregory Boyington's F4U from VMF-214.

Though it doesn't have the nostalgia of previous war birds, I'm an a10 fan. Not quite the dog fighter some of these others were though.

Not a bad jet, although the current version is somewhat more of a slow F-16, with the kit it's running.

Reminds of watching the TV series Black Sheep Squadron in the late 70's. I never missed an episode back in the day before cable/VCR's and DVR's.

To this day still one of my favorite shows! I just couldn't get enough of those gull wing Corsairs...

The History channel used to run a marathon on this series a while back before they stopped showing...well history.

I want a Corsair also. I'd settle for a replica of it or kit plane though!

I've looked at the kits for it. There's not a whole lot. Might have to invest in a set of plans and build from scratch. There are also a few real ones in civilian hands that according to the FAA still exist, but are parked in barns or hangers. If I had the chedda I'd go barn hunting!

Not to take away from the F4U. It is beautiful and legendary, but I would think, as a pure fighter, I'd rather own an F8F. The Bearcat seems like a truly sweet radial piston performer.
