However, I have flown both (okay, it was a Grumman Tiger, but damn near the same airplane) and will say that hands down, the Grumman is going to be more fun to fly. The sliding canopy is cool, and they're a little quicker and nicer to fly, IMHO.
Stick with that plane, and then once you've got your cert, transition to a 172. Remember that once you have your PPL, you're legal to fly any tricycle gear piston single that doesn't require a type rating. You'll still need insurance checkouts and stuff, but it's not like you have to re-learn to fly. Go fly a Diamond for fun, then fly a Piper, then get some TW time. Enjoy it. Have fun with it. Find out what you like.
Go with the Grumman. I love flying the Tiger our club has. My only hours in a 172 since last year were because the AI in the Tiger bit the dust the day before I was supposed to take it up.
