Which Materials?

If you're a Part 61 CFI, which course materials do you choose for your students and why?

Would your opinion change if you were to get a commission on quality instructional material?

FTH, PHAK, FAR/AIM, etc. all the specific materials listed in the PTS and using them to guide the student's ability to use them for testing purposes and continued growth in a standardized information community.
Beyond that, I like "Stick & Rudder",
and Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
No. I would not sell-out.

Most FBOs that I've seen use whatever 141 syllabus they have as a guideline for the Part 61 students - it provides the framework. The place I'm using now does that. :)

I see what Sportys are trying to do, having found me in the FAA CFI database and offering discounts on what is purchased, but I go for the official publication every time. I remember when I started instrument training having Jepps and then one year trying to buy a replacement kit, could I find a stockist? Now individuals must have a subscription - even for training?

The fact that the FAA materials and NACO charts, DUATS are pretty much free is amazing in this day and age. And while they might not be as shiny, and exciting, do ensure you know the basics. "But the Jepp book says" is not what the DPE wants to hear at any level.

  • FAA publications/circulars- informative and free.
  • FAA books : excellent source of information, concise and clear, free.
  • NTSB database, free.
  • Aviation weather center,free.
  • PTS so they know what is required of them
  • FAR /AIM for the regs etc
DPE likes the manuals not because FAA wrote them but because they are actually good. Also : Kershner's Commercial Pilot's Manual.
