Where is the pilot shortage..

Re: Where is thie pilot shortage..

From October 2006 issue of 'Flight Training' magazine's - author Ralph Hood...

"It may be hard to believe, but according to business publications, the airlines are on the cusp of tremendous, long-term growth. I first read this in The Economist, a world-class magazine of unbelievably good repute. It has been repeated by many credible sources."

Pg. 68

The only "real" shortage worldwide (not enough pilots of any kind or experience) seems to be in Asia, particularly India and China.

If you look on certain aviation job websites, there are many, many jobs posted for low-time jet jobs.

1500 TT for A-320 FO's in Asia.....the catch: 500 must be on type! Please send resume w/ currency on type, etc. Not many 1500 hr pilots here in the states have 500 of 'em in an Airbus, et al.

Goes for 74, 77, etc.....well, you get the point.......I haven't seen many true "low time" job posts.....many jobs available for people that have the requisite time though. At least that's what I've seen so far.....by all means, if you know of a job in Asia for low-timers, please post it in Jobs Available since I'd guess there are many interested around here.

Re: Where is thie pilot shortage..

What they said could be the truth, let's assume that it is, only problem is there are enough pilots to satisfy the claimed shortage.

Military Retirements
Regional Guys moving up
Regionals lowering the mins...
Pilots retiring from the Majors, are not being replaced 1 to 1.

I do know that India is going through a pilot shortage, China is having trouble, & Japan is predicting a pilot shortage in the next couple of years.

I wouldn't say there is going to be a shortage, but there will definitely be some good opportunities for those who are in the right position. Guys in their early 20s at the regionals right now are going to do very well going forward. There are going to be lots of jobs available. They may not pay great like Fedex and UPS, but nobody who has any skill will be without work.

As for overseas jobs, those have traditionally been Captain positions. Almost all countries will have rules to protect their workforce and only when an airline can prove a need will they be allowed to hire foreigners. There is usually a much stricter process for those foreigners to be First Officers. The governing body will make the airline recruit locals for those positions, even very low time ones, because they can be trained quickly ( 1 to 2 years for ab initio) versus the 7-10 years required to make a relatively experienced captain.

Very rarely will you find places that have a full career path from Second Officer to First Officer to Captain in place for foreigners. Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Emirates, Etihad, and Gulf Air to name a few. Notice they are all in countries where an airline pilot is not a high wage earning position so there is little incentive for locals to become pilots.

China, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Taiwan and probably a few other places have some opportunities for F.O.s, but their career path is less certain. Locals will be upgraded before foreigners or not at all.

Re: Where is thie pilot shortage..

Well I've been saying there is a shortage coming and I say its already manifesting itself.

The regionals can't find anyone to hire.

It's only going to get worse/move up the line (i.e. "majors") in a few years or get horrifically bad at the regionals as a mass exodous takes palce.

Oh and all those furloughs ... its been five years already you really think they're all coming back? Hell I'd be surprised to see 50% come back.
