I tried this on APC but was not really much help, where do the MIA guys live? There must be a cheap safe quite place, so far my search is pushing me north near Plantation/Davies/Sunrise/Coconut grove, is that the place to be?
Where is the MIA regional pilot ghetto?
You get picked up by American Eagle? I'm not sure where the crashpads are but I can give you some advice since I've been a resident here for a few years now...
I recommend, staying west of Miami International airport in Dade County. There are some nice areas east of the airport, but there pretty expensive especially downtown, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Beach or pretty much anything near the water. If you stay west of the airport its mostly suburbs, the crime is relatively light, but there is a lot of traffic and you won't have a backyard. Plenty of chongas to chase around though, I'll let you figure out what chongas are when you get here!
Some places I recommend from closest to farthest from MIA international:
Fountainbleu: mostly packed with residential apartments and somewhat pricy but really close to the airport, you fly over it on final to 9 and 8.
Kendall: further southwest, I lived there for 2 years and flight instructed at KTMB, is an blast and is really nice there, average price, lot of traffic.
Homestead/Perrine: about a 30 minute drive depending upon traffic, a mix of country redneck Florida and latino culture, pretty nice area, reasonably priced but a bit of a drive. Friend of mine lives there. Less traffic.
Miami Lakes: NW of MIA international and west of KOPF, pretty nice area also little pricy and traffic
Hialeah: North of MIA international, known for being 95% Cuban, parts of it will look rundown if your from Jersey but relatively safe neighborhood and you can find a cheap efficiency there also, 15 minutes from the MIA
High-crime areas to avoid, you can look them up on the map to see where they are:
Little Haiti
Brownsville
Overtown
Opa Locka (east of the airport)
Miami Gardens
Guys,
Thanks for the reply's. Let me tell you about myself, this will help. I work for Eagle, out of JFK. I live in NW NJ, in a RURAL area, I leave my car running at the bank/deli/etc with the keys in them (obviously since the car would not run without the keys). I live w my GF who is extremely likely to someday be the wife, and lets just assume I should be planning for a child sometime in the future.
My best drive time to JFK is 1 hour 13min, door to lot, at the crack of dawn, no traffic, hauling, it is 74 miles. Normal is 1 hour 30min outside rush hour, and 2 hours and 20min is typical in rush hour, I have never had it take me over 3 hours ever. I do not hate this drive all too much, but I really would like to cut it down a bit, for example if we had a Newark base, which we dont, but if we did it would be 40 miles to Newark, and be 50min no traffic, 1 hour 15min in moderate flow, and about 2 hours in tops of rush hour, which these drive times would be something I would like.
In NJ we have a 3br/2ba, its a cookie cutter looking Bilevel house, with a yard and all. Again I live in a rural area. We rent out the 3rd bedroom and he gets the 2nd bathroom, so we basically pay $500 each before utilities (the gf and I each).
The flow plans put me 50ish of about 75 in MIA so holding a line is most likely(looks like I will move Oct 1st), but I realize everything is most likely going to change 10 times before it even gets here, so I am planning with both situations in mind. I have a line in July at JFK.
Basically I would like to find something in Miami that is under 1hour outside rush hour, and 2 hours if I am on reserve during rush hour. The big thing about MIA is it is more day trips/2 day trips, unlike JFK which is mostly 4 day trips. So the drive time is a bit more important I guess, but I drive in and out of NYC so how much worst can it get....
What are my options based on this, I want safe and within those ranges, the big thing to us is we are looking to areas we can feel at home at, North Miami did not feel like something we would ever want, but Plantation did. We really would like a 2bedroom, and $1000 would be great, but $1250 is the cap, but around $1000 would make life a ton easier. Someone who knows the greater Miami area I really really really thank you for taking the time, as well as everyone else who has answer, hopefully being more specific helps! Thank you all so so so so much!
oh you guys and you crime... You should check out parts of North and South Memphis... They won't take your car there, at all, they will just kill you and leave you in it.

Unfortunately some neighborhoods down here are right on par with both those cities. The funny thing in Miami though is that you can go from a nasty slum to a million dollar neighborhood by literally crossing the street.
