When to contact tower?

I don't think I have ever asked to switch to tower. I contact tower when I am ready for departure.

I've never had any problems.

Geez how complex can you make it???? I hope no student pilots are reading this thread.

My rule of thumb - if you are at the intersection, ready to depart and have not been handed over to tower, just go over to tower.

If your departure ARTCC did not hand you over to Center, would you just switch frequencies without a handoff? I'd ask them if it was okay to switch frequencies. I'd use that same procedure to prevent any confusion.

It's not that complex.

I would do the same in the above situation - pity we are not talking about that situation.

There are a few difference - Tower/Ground can see you and know you are safe ARTCC/Center can not see you so silence on the frequency is more likely to be determined as an emergency.

Also sometimes at night controllers expand the areas they are working, hence the chance that you presumption could be wrong, holding short of the runway - your presumption is OK.

Sometimes at busy airports, if things are normal and you are holding short and have not been instructed to change frequencies I see no harm in just changing - if they hear no reply the will presume you have - however there is also no harm giving ground a quick heads up.

Unless mentioned either in the AF/D, NOTAMS or ATIS, I'll contact tower when my run up is complete, and I'm ready to go. If I'm #1, #2, #21 doesn't matter. Worst they're gonna do is tell me to call them when I AM #1 in line.

When I was in MSP I wasn't even in sequence yet and ground told me "241ND, Tower's looking for you on xxx.xx" Shows how much pre planning they do sometimes. When I finally did get to the line I was #4

[/ QUOTE ]Try it at APA or ORL.. Should be fun for the locals. Of course, they tell you what they want you to do on the ATIS, but transients miss it with surprising consistency.
