When can you start?

Ok, so since he was going to do his CFI now while waiting for April, would it be better to do the CFI at ATP instead of the FBO or no real difference?

Thanks you guys for tolerating my questions-you've really been helpful!!

If you've already got the money set up, I really don't see how it could hurt to have the CFI. Personally, if I can get a job to support it financially, I was gonna get it to flight instruct a bit until PACE. That way I'm not just spinning my wheels, and if Mesa starts sliding, I'm already on the track I was planning. Now, to find said job......

"Just be careful over at Mesalounge. There's a lot of good info over there, and there are a lot of haters."
---------------------------------------------------

Gee, you noticed that, too?

JR

Yeah, a lot of ACA'ers drifted in during the attempted Mesa aqcuisition and never left. Most all of the Mesa people on there seem to be pretty decent folks....'cept for one of the moderators, bog-something-or-other...that dude's a bastard. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I wouldn't outright discount Mesalounge as those are the FO's and captains you're going to be flying with; discussing situations and issues that aren't in the brochures, in the classroom or whatnot.

Obviously pilots love to complain, but there's a lot of good information going back and forth.

I'd certainly closely listen to Bogberto as I personally know him and doubt he'd lead you astray. He's certainly not the complaining type, but certainly isn't a koolaid drinker either.

But dats jess mah opin-e-on! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Agreed. However, there are some guys over there that complain no matter what. To me, they seem like trolls that keep getting fed. I've been reading it for over a year now (never posted), and I THINK I have a feel for who's got the good info (and the not-so-nice-to-hear-but-true info) and who's just complaining to get attention.

Which is why I read EVERY one of his posts both there and here. Plus his normally got hot chics in his avatars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Pilots are a lot like soldiers in the military....always bitching. They could be sitting on a pile of gold bars, and still complain about how uncomfortable the bars are to sit on.

Hmm... Always used to have Iron-Maiden/Megadeth-ish illustrations of corpses. Maybe we're seeing a kinder, gentler Bog?

I started MAPD in 2000, in the ab-initio program. After 9/11 it looked like the company was going to be hurting for a while, and many pilots were furloughed. I chose to leave the program and finish my degree. My friends who stayed in the program faced a lenghthy delay from graduation to interview, as much as a year, but they were all hired. All of them. That being said, with US Air potentially circling the drain, it wouldn't do anybody looking at the PACE or ab-initio program to think about getting a CFI. I know of a couple of folks that were able to instruct while waiting on ground school for Mesa, which is just a plain 'ol win-win situation.

Yeah, I have a relative that was in the ab-initio program during 9/11. He sat on the ground for a long time, but he stuck it out. I imagine it was frustrating and boring in Farmington, though. Now he's flying RJs. I'm still seriously considering getting my CFI in the next few months "just in case."

Hello Kell,

Yeah, if you have the time and money, getting your CFI would be a good idea. First, as a backup, and second, if you do go PACE and get on with a regional, to make some extra $$$ on your days off. It's an option I'm considering.

Happy Landings,

JR

Not sure if the CFI-ing on the side thing is allowed/practical/legal. For whatever reason I've gotten the impression that the 1000/1200 hrs a year limit applies to all commercial flying one does. Somebody please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Hello Aloft,

Maybe you're right...I seem to recall something like that now that you mention it. I think Part 121 is 100 hours per month with a maximum of 1000 per year. But does non-airline flight training count towards that?

Thank,

JR

Any flying counts toward the total per year. I'm almost positive any commercial flying does. Not sure about personal since a guy who needs time off could just tool around in his Cessna, then around Xmas and New Years say "Sorry! I'm at my limit!"

Hmmm,

Hmmm...that sucks. Well, I guess you could always give ground school or just stick to BFR's and AC checkouts.

JR

I wanna know how you get to be the FAA guy that does the checkrides--he gets $350 for what 2-3 hours worth of work? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Some of the current CFI's here might know. I think it takes so many hours and certain CFI awards...but I'm only guessing. Anyone?

Thanks,

JR

I think JT is/was trying to get into the DE thing. Most of the time it's like anything else in aviation, it's all in who ya know. I'm pretty sure there are minimums, resumes, degress, etc. But the clincher is in who you know at the local FSDO.
