It's pretty cool how they handle the ESPN Gameday transportation. Herbie left Baton Rouge on an UP King Air 350 at 12:15pm and was in Ann Arbor in time to call Michigan/PSU with a a 3:30 kickoff.
Their website says:
Say, six four-hour round trips per year (avg 2 hour legs), that's $18,716 per trip ($4,680/hr). Do they charge a sales tax, airport fee, or tourist tax?
- $17,500 initiation fee
- $8,500 annual dues starting in the second year
- $3,950 per hour
College buddy of mine left a regional for one of them...GAMA or Wheels I have no idea...but he seems pretty happy.GAMA supplies the pilots to WheelsUp.
The WheelsUp business model is interesting. Some of their guys attending NBAA were staying at the same hotel I was (I was in town for a different event) and we got to chatting over a number of nights.
The 17,500 buys you the membership - you still pay by the flight hour, but there are different rates for different aircraft. Given their target market, the re-up for $8500 a year is a almost a rounding error to that clientele. They seem to pay all right given the equipment and job - even as an FO you get PIC typed in the 350...although they do want ATP mins for that same FO role. <shrug> For the right person, flying for them doesn't seem like an awful gig.
