what's wrong with great lakes?

Re: what\'s wrong with great lakes?

Just my two cents, but I have a big problem with only paying these airline pilots 20000 a year or even less. That is just insulting pay! Most pilots went through a lot of training, spent a lot of money on training and worked hard for their ratings. I know I did. I wonder how the passengers would feel if they knew that the airline was taking low time pilots in order to only pay them poverty level wages. Anybody else feel the same way?

Seriously though, I think the pay issue sucks. I asked my buddy the other day who is getting ready for is last year of college and I asked him what kind of pay he'll be able to expect at his first job as a mechanical (?) engineer...he tells me around $49,000/year. He went to school longer (even though I'm sure it could have been done quicker), but I spent a hell of a lot more money and all I get is $15,000/year if I'm lucky. Hell, I could go be an assistant manager at Walgreen's and make more money, but it wouldn't be near as much fun.

In my opinion (take it for what its worth) the pay isn't going to increase. The airlines are barely surviving right now, and increasing pilot pay isn't going to help. Personally, if I was faced with the decision to earn less money, or not have a job, I'll take less money (until I could find another job). It's unfortunate that it's come to this, but it's what pilots have to deal with right now.

Not to contridict what you're saying, but a friend of mine was in one of Express Jet's first newhire classes after 9/11. This guy had 4000 TT, was a C90 captain for a 135 company, and was an SIC in their lears. He took the job at Express Jet because it was a step UP, not in pay, but in QOL.

Just an FYI. It's not all low-timers that are getting these jobs.

Also, one can make much more than $15k/yr instructing or flying professionally. Airnet guys get around $30k or so first year, I think Ameriflight is right around the same. You know what the pilots make, and you make the decision to work there. If you don't like the pay, don't work there.

Great Lakes is the same way. Low pay, low QOL. Fast(er) upgrade if the economy is going good. I've flown on many GLs flights non-revving and their pilots are a great bunch. Would I work there? Not a chance. I value my QOL more. But I have a girlfriend and dog to watch after
