What's the point of this? (multiple glass with portable GPS)

Re: What's the point of this?

PS. I never bought a damn handheld. If you have an electrical failure, you pull the standby. If that doesn't work, it's your day to learn. Friggin kids. Get off my lawn.

I have a hard time understanding some people, oh well.:pirate:

Re: What's the point of this?

All that fancy glass and you girls are still doing 150 twenty five miles out and making FREIGHT into LATE FREIGHT. Forsooth!

I mean even now that I'm ahem kind of one of you, I still see the red fog descend over my eyes when some dude is puttering along at 152 speeds for a "stabilized approach". Honestly, why not just fly 150 the entire way so you don't accidentally do something crazy like going fast. :P

I like how you made a broad generalization and an assumption all in one sentence. You'd think somebody with a philosophy degree would note the pitfalls and avoid them. Or not.
Time for your medication, gramps. You know the doctor says you're not supposed to get all riled up talking about the 'glory days'. It's bad for your heart.

Re: What's the point of this?

Big difference between having once met the requirements for a rating and being proficient at it.

This is the truth. There's no way I'd be able to perform a lazy eight to commercial PTS standards, or fly an NDB approach (what's that?) to minimums. I should probably surrender my commercial certificate and instrument rating.

None of you better report me to the FSDO for this! I'll find you!!!!!

Oh lord, I forgot the sarcasm tag again, and now I'm being taken back to the Home by all those nice people in white coats.

So how bumpy was that?????

I think it wound up being about a 7/10, but at the time it was maybe 3/10. No excuses for the blurry camera, except maybe I'd had three or four too many coffees. ;)

Re: What's the point of this?

The answer is of course "All of the above."

Glass for us wily Gen Xers, and round dials for the old curmudgeons! How many airspeed indicators do you need? Trick question; there are never too many.

150? What's 150?

250 to the marker, son. Let's see your Beechcrap jet do that!

Re: What's the point of this?

Devil's advocate: Are there functions or software features in that yoke mounted doohickey that the panel mounted stuff doesn't do? Fuel burn calculators, airport database or other information, etc, so on?

The G1000 does everything the 496 does and more.

Ah, the real reason you dropped out of law school. You can't read! And the Beatchjet will do 250 to the marker, you might just wind up landing a little long.

He's just whining about the ATRs going to DFW, anyhow. It's not their fault they slow down. They can only exceed 150 knots for so long before the duct tape starts peeling off the flight control surfaces.

Re: What's the point of this?

Or that they are exercising prudence in case of a total electrical failure, about the only thing that will cripple the G1000 (and even then, only after depleting not one but TWO batteries). A handheld is, IMHO, a great thing to have when flying IFR whether you're flying steam gauges or glass. In either case, an electrical failure can pretty much put you up Sheep Creek without a paddle if you don't have some sort of redundant nav capability. As others have mentioned, there is also the very real possibility that they just like having the weather information or recording their ground track.

I appreciate the utility and legitimacy of everything you brought up (especially when flying in Alaska), and in that context the original photo isn't that bad. You might have missed the part where I said "multiple" and "readily accessible, like mojo's story about the dual yoke mounts and the C210 photo on this page. The 210 photo is ridiculous, plain and simple... but most of those turn out to be product demonstrators for avionics salesmen so it's probably a moot point anyway.

Maybe I just had to be "that guy that was wrong on the internet" the other day.

Unless it's a demo plane for an avionics sales person, that guy has way too much money burning a hole in his pocket.

Sorry, didn't mean to call you out! I agree, if you feel that you need a handheld when flying a G1000 aircraft day VFR, you need help. That said, a handheld is cheap insurance if you fly a lot of IFR, especially in something with only one alternator.

I believe that was the case.
