What's the difference... MP3 player or "Monitoring" the ADF?

Seems some of the "oooh-I-wouldn't-listen-to-an-MP3-player-in-the-cockpit" guys are the same guys who know what is on ever single ADF from here to TimBukToo..

What makes the ADF ok and the MP3 player taboo?

It's cause they wear the blazer while they listen to the ADf instead of a leather jacket.

You see the MP3 player is for your music and the ADF is to listen to your sports games.

I can't wait for someone to ask what an ADF is.:banghead:

Yeh.. You just plug it into your headset..

My Lightspeed was setup for an external audio source, since I have gone to Sennheisers, I need to buy one of those "aftermarket" audio box deals..

The reception is great.. Used it in the RV before we got the 396...

I think the difference is that one is slightly easier to explain to the company, faa, ntsb, passengers, passengers families if something were to happen. Not saying that you're gonna crash if you listen to your MP3 player, but if something were to happen, I do believe that the ADF would be a little bit closer to being "accepted"

Good question. I find it much easier to hear and understand ATC with the mp3 player going vs the ADF.

I do believe that the ADF would be a little bit closer to being "accepted"

You believe incorrectly..

You'd be hanged either way...

For me, my Mp3 player in the Lightspeed would actually be better, as you can set it to cut out the music when the squelch is broken..

I also think, and I could VERRRY easily be wrong, but with an MP3 player coming into one's own headset, there would be little proof it would be recorded by anything..

I don't see how it would make it into the CVR recording...

I just find it ironic that quite a few of the "no mp3" player guys have no issues with ADF listening..

Just curious, where do intercoms that have built in audio inputs fit in. I mean they obviously are approved if they can be installed and they do mute the audio when the radio or intercom is active?

Exactly.. I guess because people will always do "things they arn't supposed to..

We are not allowed to read "non-company materials" in the flight deck.. Nor are we allowed to "listen to the ADF for other than identification of the station" type stuff..

People do it all day long...

Same reason why people do all sorts of dumb things in airplanes that are illegal..

Rules were meant to be broken, right?

I've listened to the Sox game in the air. 620 will bring you right to BGR.

There is nothing wrong with identifying the station for your entire trip. I'm just being safe

The only things I can ever get with the ADF are talk radio or radio disney... no thank you! I'd rather listen to nothing at all! I hear that they make a cheap strike finder though.
