What would YOU wear?

I recently inquired to an internship at a smaller local airport. I am majoring in Airport Management, and am going to meet with the Airport Manager in a couple of weeks. Thing is, I don't think it's technically in interview....he just said to come by (he wanted to show me the facilities) and we could discuss plans for the upcoming year. Here is where the problem comes in. What should I wear? I don't want to overdress in a suit and tie, but I don't want to look too casual. It will be in the middle of October in Indiana, so...... What do Airport Managers wear? Do they wear a suit and tie to work? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Khaki dress pants, dress shirt and tie. In your case a suit may over do it a bit, but you don't want to look to casual. :)
 
I would wear some slacks and a button down long sleeve shirt, with the top button undone and no tie.

Formal in the sense that you're acting as a professional, but not over the top.

I'd say a full suit would be way over the top.

What I would do is call him a week before or a few days before just to confirm, and to say you're looking forward to meeting with him, etc. And then just say "What's the dress code at Van Nuys?" (your airport). If your call starts off with a friendly tone and you ask the question correctly, there should be no problem getting the information without sounding awkward.

You are always being interviewed, even in a walk-though. Dress professionally. Clean dress shoes, no dust from the closet. Take the time to polish them. Its all in the details. A jacket and tie are always your best bet. October in Indiana, you won't sweat. You are being interviewed whether they call it one or not. Bring a note pad and a pen. Its an airport management interview/walk-through/internship, act like this is it. Your only shot. Be cool and confident. An internship can easily turn into a full time job. Good luck. --Just another 2 cents. Clean up any internet networking sites (Facebook). What may be on your personal page can mean the difference between you and another intern. Funny pictures or quotes between you and your friends can be detrimental to a job.

going into a small-ish airport in Indiana dressed like youre interviewing for CEO at a Fortune 500... you're gonna come off as a TOOL who has no concept of reality.

be a real person, not a stuffed suit.

A small-ish airport in Indiana doesn't require professionalism? He didn't go to school to be a fry cook at a chicken restaurant.

You can't convey you are a professional without a black suit and tie?

Look sharp, absolutely. Looking *out of place* is not a good look.
 
Definitely the Long sleeve button up with no tie. You can use black pants instead of khakis for a little more formal look. It will be professional, but not overdone.

I'm old school...I don't wear a tie without a jacket, but I'll wear a jacket without a tie. Summer airline pilot uniform excluded of course.

On the notepad would be a few pertinent questions,.....
 
The business casual attire mentioned above sounds like the reasonable way to go. Before I started working at my current job my boss asked me to come by his office to "show me around." I wasn't sure what that meant, but I dressed respectfully and took my resume. When I arrived the boss was not there yet but I was greeted by a human resources representative. We immediately sat down and started discussing interview questions in an interview environment. It went well and here I am. Anyways, the lesson is be prepared.
 
I should also add that my suggestion is just based on my own personal style. I have a friend that wears nice slacks but more of a golf type shirt to interviews and work (in an engineering office as a CAD Specialist) and that works great for him.
