What plans and phones is everyone using?

CFI A&P

Exploring the world one toilet at a time.
First off let me say that I am not looking to create a 'this is better than that' thread, but rather trying to find out what cell plans everyone has and why? Please refrain from negative comments such as "I can't believe you young whipper snappers pay that much! My flip phone only costs me $9 a month." That doesn't help anyone out here. The reason I ask is that I am looking to change my current plan because my needs have shifted (today's needs of voice/ data/ text/ international are different than when I signed with this carrier several years ago) and I am interested in seeing what other JC users are using and why.

In your response can you elaborate on the plan you have and why did you choose that plan? We all chose our plans for various reasons such as "I need unlimited data for my style of usage so I use this company.", or " I frequently travel internationally so I went with carrier XYZ because of their international rates." or "ABC is the only carrier with reliable service in my home area." Don't hold back, even if you signed with a carrier because they gave you a pilot/ military or whatever discount, let us know.

Thank you.

iPhone six. Still have my worldwide unlimited data plan which isn't available any more but is actually less costly than ending the international data and going to a limited plan. Used the ALPA or SouthernJets discount, I can't remember.

At the time, data + a light dose of international data roaming was more than just going all-out worldwide unlimited data. AT&T doesn't offer unlimited domestic any more and their highest tier of data is stupidly expensive. So I'm 'grandfathered' into it.

I had Tmobile before, they were "OK" but didn't offer the equipment I wanted at the time.

Didn't go with Sprint because I have a job. :)

AT&T has some ridiculous coverage gaps in Jamaica-Queens, but for the most part is workable. At the end of the day, I've got a device in my pocket that I can pretty much buy a car down to sending a drunken rage-filled text to @SpiceWeasel so I can deal with coverage gaps.

Cheap flip with Sprint with Delta discount. Wife, iPhone 6 on her sis's Sprint Friends & Family also with Delta discount.

TMobile if you travel internationally due to their roaming agreements.

Verizon if you're domestic using company discount.

An MVNO prepaid like straight talk or Net10 running on Verizon if you're cheap like me :). I pay $43/month including taxes for unlimited talk/text and 3 gb LTE data. Not horrible.

I wouldn't do anything else other than the above, except maybe AT&T if you just happen to live in a soft Verizon area (there aren't many).

Stay away from Sprint at all costs no matter how cheap they are and TMobile is next to worthless domestically IMO. Their redeeming value is their international roaming.

As for phones, I would purchase a Verizon iPhone 5S or 6 because you can use it on any network but Sprint. There may be a few others that allow you to do the same as well. Most versatile way to go IMO should your needs change.

iPhone 6 Plus on TMobile. Having international data is amazing for my job.

Damned near required.

Hilariously, some of the senior captains would preach about "I don't need innaNASHNUL data, *yarble* *yarble* *yarble*" but when they see that you're booking your jumpseat home immediately when the window opens as you're drinking a Heineken at Susies Saloon in Amsterdam, they're real quick to want to borrow it.

"Silly Luddite, fetch me a beer and I'll think about it."

Samsung S5 with T-mobile. I travel internationally a lot and the unlimited international data and text in the bundle is key. Nothing like pulling up trip advisor, yelp, GPS, etc and not worrying about roaming. Calls are under 20 cents a minute (I think, and this was calling from Switzerland). I use the Samsung as it I just like it a lot better than an iphone. I also run a Nexus 7 in the cockpit so I like the cross capability. And, for a few extra dollars, I can carry an extra battery and replace as needed. I also pay the extra amount each month for the Jump plan so I can upgrade every 6 months to a year.

You can text using GoGo internet for free through T-mobile and I believe they have an unlimited international talk plan for $20 more a month?

iPhone 5S with sprint unlimited...in Dallas its pretty good...I have a problem in most places especially Denver and Chicago

so I would recommend not Sprint.

iPhone 5S for me, 5C for the wife. 10 GB shared on AT&T for ~$125/mo after the union plus discount.

The network used to make me want to break things. But now it seems much better and gets better every year.

I'm just domestic U.S., but real happy with AT&T. We have four phones on the plan, 10gig shared data, $160/ month. If / when we need a phone, you are on your own- but getting them through a cell provider (I get a free phone after two years! Not.) is a ripoff. The nexus 5 phones rock, and are $350 delivered to the door. I guess the Nexus 6 is even better. http://www.google.com/nexus/6/

T-Mobile. 2 smartphone lines with unlimited talk/text. 1 gig each 4G then down graded to slower speed. + 1 gig 4G data only for the ipad (foreflight)
+ 200 Mb free data for the ipad. $96 per month, have yet to find a better deal. I'm getting a Nexus 6 as soon as I get 2nd year regional pay. :p

Man, looking at the prices you guys pay, I'm getting ripped off! Verizon, unlimited call/text, 4gb data, $130 a month. Happy with the service, not happy with the price.

Assuming you've reached the end of your contract you just need to update your plan. Last year I changed Verizon plans:

600 minutes, 2gb $89 to Unlimited talk/text, 2gb $59

Are you really using 4gb data on your cell service? Maybe you can reduce that? I've never used much over 1 gb and I work in technology. Seems like I'm almost always attached to a wireless access point saving cell data. Things like iCloud don't upload and updates don't download unless I'm on a WAP.

Old, long standing contract with unlimited data and text through sprint. In my hometown it worked amazingly well. In Phoenix, Arizona it is the worst thing I've ever experienced. Basically have pockets throughout the city where it works as it should and everywhere else is garbage.

Perhaps this is true, being that Apple products are way overpriced. So, wealthier people can afford them. Whereas normal folks can afford low end android devices. I kinda see this as a basic economics issue. John can't afford a $600 iphone so he got an android device for $199.

Edit: My nexus 4 makes my ipad look like a joke! Seriously!

Verizon iPhone 5 free with 2 year contract.
Verizon iPhone 6 is $199 with a 2 year contract.
