What one year at a regional will get you

I love that a lot of those guys don't realize that by taking the low pay/quick upgrade on something that seats about 70-90 seats, that's one less 737/DC-9/717/whatever that mainline flies. Therefore, they'll need a lot more than just the PIC time to move on since they're shooting themselves in the foot...

I keep trying to tell my friend that. He flies at an unamed regional that flies large Embraer aircraft. He was all excited about the new 175 order. I told him that every new 175 on the property is one more 737 to the desert. I, for one, see myself moving on one of these days. Keep the mainline planes at mainline!

Excellent point, anything that is a jet (non-turboprop) should be at mainline. Seat capacity isn't the issue, costs are.

Hey, my attorney is in TX as well! Well not MY attorney anymore, but you know what I mean!

wait, what am I saying. that won't happen. there are too many FO's that can't wait to upgrade to go to a "major". just get your 1000 PIC and you're set!

Wheelsup and Kellwolf,

Be careful...y'all are sounding like me now, and you wouldn't want the regional guys hating you!!!:)

I hate to slippery-slope this, but it seems to me that the answer to most of these concerns is one union with one pax-based pay rate.

And dough,

That's a beautiful quote.

pretty sure their CA rates were on par with US Air's 190 rates though...at least in the top end (better actually by $15/hr or so).

Here's a question. Let's suppose XJT inks a deal to get 175's for CAL. A payrate is hammered out and approved. Will you actually quit if the rates are the same as chautauqua/republic? I doubt it.

Just because our respective companies don't operate these large aircraft now, doesn't mean they won't in the future. Heck, AWAC, up until last year operated 100 seat aircraft as a feeder for a mainline partner.

You forgot to mention all the HOT FA action. :sarcasm:

Yeah it pretty much sucks, and I feel for anybody taking out a huge loan to jump into this. I am kinda stupid though so I am gonna press on with my training.

crew interaction is one of the best parts (for me at least). seriously. I couldn't do the whole flying alone thing. I guess it's great for those that like "alone" time but I enjoy a good conversation and joking around (just look at all my posts).

I guess I believe almost all of the expansion at the regional level is over and most guys getting hired now won't rise in seniority as quickly thereby getting higher pay with fantastic lines.

Though the expansion may be ending I think the majors are going to have to do more hiring from the top, keeping some movement going.

Anyway this thread has some great info; seeing numbers on airlinepilotcentral.com vs actually reading someone's experience with yr 1 at a regional makes a big difference.

Don't really see 6+/yr captains moving on in droves to the majors.

I see Jr. CA's and FO's flooding the gates when the Majors start hiring ... again.

Call me crazy but I "called" the "pilot shortage" and got crucified for that one ... ;)

"but it seems to me that the answer to most of these concerns is one union with one pax-based pay rate"

If the airline pilots in this country tried to merge together in such a fashion, airline management would see it as such a threat that they would find a way to make it illegal.

Wheelsup, I appreciate you breaking down the numbers. Sounds like you did better than most their first year.

So I decided to figure out some stats from the year I worked at a regional. Here they are:
  • Pay: $24,427 hourly
  • Per diem: $3,402
  • Total: $27,829
  • Average TOTAL Days spent at home on coach (including not flying on reserve): 16.2
  • Average scheduled days off /month: 15.1 including 5 weeks after training of no flying
  • Average scheduled days off /month: 13.8 not including the 5 week break (essentially the months spent flying the "line").
  • Average "TAFB" or time away from base: 2,430 hours.
  • Average time (in days) away from home/month (not including training): 8.4
  • Average time (in days) away from home for the entire year including 6 weeks training: 142.8
  • FAR block (flying time): 46:21 /month for the entire 12 months
  • FAR block (flying time): 60:15 /month not including ground school and sim (essentially the average for months that I was flying the "line").
In the next year (assuming the bottom doesn't fall out here or in the industry) I expect to:
  • FAR block ~80 hours/month
  • Credit ~95 hours/month
  • TAFB ~300 hours/month
This will result in (assuming we don't get the old contract back, which would result in a $5/hour raise):
  • Pay: $40,336 hourly
  • Per diem: $5,400
  • Total: $45,736
Average Days off/month: 13.5
Side business income: ~$5,000

Total as a CFI the year prior: ~$27,500. Including side business: ~$32,000. Total flight hours as a CFI the year prior: 985. Average days off as a CFI: 8/month :).

Wow that was depressing looking at that...

You're a dumb jerk, you should just quit right now...

Seriously, I think it's good for the starry-eyed noobs to see this kind of stuff and see what they might be getting into before breaking the bank. Good stuff.
