What is the most difficult license/rating?

My answer?

Whichever one you are working on!

Why?

Because everything else is irrelevant. You've already got other ratings or aren't working on it.

Private all the way... It is the first one, it is the one where you actually learn to fly. Everything is new, you are totally relient on your CFI and have to trust them for everything. The most doubts creep into your head at this point.

All the other rating are just add ons, you already know how to fly at that point.

Honestly though, none of the ratings are all that difficult, if you just work on them and practice you can get it done fairly easily. The hard part is getting it done economically :)

I'd say the private would be the most difficult overall to obtain. So many people start training for it and so few ever follow all the way through to completion, whether it be due to motivation, ability, finances, etc...

Since every answer is a good answer, I'll say mine so far has been my multi instrument as initial.

I would say the CFI was the most difficult rating. It was not so much the flying as it was the vast amount of knowledge I had to absorb.

It depends on the person.

Personally, I thought the private pilot, instrument, and flight instructor training was pretty easy. It's not like it was all fun and games, but I just studied a lot and got them done. They came naturally to me.

The single-engine initial commercial training was the killer for me. I think I'm weird. The oral exam was easy, but I had a really hard time getting good enough at the maneuvers. No matter how much I practiced, I couldn't make the plane do what I wanted it to do.

Honestly the hardest/most intense training was for my current job's INDOC. You may not get alot of street cred coming out of it flying a Baron but ask anyone who has gone through it or didn't make it through all of it, some of the hardest stuff I've ever seen.
