What is the average CFI hourly pay at now?

I think there are 2 things being discussed. 1. what are the actual CFIs making, and 2. what are students being charged by the school for the instructor. I could be wrong though.

Also @Mike Wise welcome to Florida in general. there are a ton of instructors and pilots keeping the pay low in the state in general. there are exceptions, but not many.

The reason I ask, is because I hear the flight school I used to teach at is now offering $50 /hour for flight and ground instruction to their CFIs. Let's do some quick math...

Fly 800 hours /year = $40,000
Ground 400 hours /year = $20,000

That's $60,000 plus incentives to be a flight instructor nowadays. Pretty damn good money if I do say so myself. Much better than the $25 /flight hour I earned and the $15 /ground hour. Seems the market is really starting to shift in pilot's favors all over the industry.

Big school in AZ was salaried.

50 hour work week came out to $11.50/hour :bounce:

American Flyers was offering $17/hour

In Houston the instructor rate ranges from 42-60. CFI pay ranges from 17-25 when hired by a flight school, with 25 being the highest that I know of. As an independent, you can do better.

So is getting paid $50 /hour pretty good by today's standards then? School is charging the students $95 /hour for flight and ground and I have to wonder if that will deter some people.

Depends on how busy you are. If the cost is prohibited, then you will not make as much money nor fly as much. If you can average 20 hrs a week at 50/hr, then you are doing well. Not sure if 95/hr is sustainable unless they are picking up training contracts.

Wow. I think $95/hour will deter people. Wonder if that is a lack of competition, greed, or a company trying to pay the bills in an environment of less students/less people interested in flying (fewer students available, still have most of the same business expenses to cover).

I'll take $95 an hour, I pay $120 an hour for a 172N. Plus, $50 for my instructor.
