What is on this F111 Aardvark?

GhostRider in the Sky
Notice at the leading edge of the wing at the root, looks almost like a canard deflected at high angles of attack. It is not present in other pictures I looked at, nor cold I come up with any info on it.

Also I just notices only one of the elevators is deflected... strange aircraft.

Re: What is on this F111 Ardvark?

Those are rotating gloves. They rotate as you see it, to allow the leading edge slats that are next to the wing root to fully extend....otherwise the two would contact each other. They're on the end of the wing gloves (the portion where the swing-wings connect to).

Here's a better shot of how they work: EF-111A Raven landing

Tailerons.

Correct.

The stabs actually move opposite each other for augmented roll control and are the only thing controlling roll when the wings are swept past 45 degrees. Forward of 45 degrees, there are spoilers atop each wing for roll assistance.

The F-111 is a really, really cool airplane and often overlooked in the history of tactical aircraft.

The EF-111 was what I wanted to fly, but they stopped hiring for them when I was in UPT.

Looks like he is torching his fuel dump with his AB for an airshow? Did we talk about this awhile back it looks vaguely familiar.

The F-111 was one of the best looking planes from the Cold War. It looks it's ready to kick someone's ass.

Ok, what is that fiery vortex-like apparatus on the left wing in the first picture? I assume it's some kind of camera effect, but it's really blowing my mind.

Yeah, looks like the environmentals and the blower light mixing with the wingtip/LEX vortices.....pretty cool effect though. I too love this jet....unfortunately before my time, and the wrong service (:) ) @ Mike, you probably had more fun blowing up stuff with lots of different kinds of ordnance in the Hog, than just being an infrequent user and SME of the HARM :) Still, I would have asked for the same thing had I been in the same shoes.....fast, low, your co-pilot (or was it an ECMO?) can reach over and hit you if you scare them.

It's a radar-absorbing plasma cloak. :)

Or a vapor condensing in the vortex coming off the inboard end of the right flap, then being let by the sun, or maybe a firey, firey flame.

Yes, was a Pilot/WSO (Nav rated) crew. The regular F-111s had full flight controls both sides, but the EF-111 had the right seat flight controls removed to make room for the ECM suite.
