What is an RMI?

Not only that, but you're screwed when you want to fly IFR . . . lol. Although it's a nice fantasy that you can just file direct, you'll be shocked when you call for your clearance and you're told, "Advise when ready to copy your full-route clearance", and the word direct isn't anywhere near it!!!
:)

We get direct 99% of the time within 20....not sure if already being at FL400 and above has anything to do with it though :D

I'm a bit confused - - what prevents one from flying IFR with nothing but an RMI? I've got more than a few hours flying a T-37 IFR, and it has only an RMI and one VOR/DME. Not only can it be used to fly direct, it can be used to fly a course inbound, or a course ourtbound, or to any given VOR fix. (We called it FIX-TO-FIX navigation, and I believe that topic has been previously discussed on this forum.)

The head falls, and the tail rises...

I agree with you 100%!! I was saying that he'd be screwed if he didn't learn anything except for GPS direct!!

We're on the same page!

First you take off on your solo with flaps 40. Now you can't read. TonyW hasn't posted in this thread. TonyC and TonyW are two different people. And TonyW last name is Wang not Wong. Carry on Chris!

TonyC, do you military guys shoot ILS approaches?

I'm not military anymore, but yes, they shoot ILS approaches... and LOC approaches... and VOR aproaches... and TACAN approaches... and NDB approaches... and PARs (Precision Approach Radar) and ASRs (Airport Surveillance Radar), .... and airborne radar directed approaces... visual approaches... oh, and contact approaches on a few occassions.

I haven't done it personally, but some airplanes were equipped to fly MLS approaches... I'm sure some of them do GPS approaches these days...

:)

Then there was the TLS...

I'm glad you clarified that (I think) - - that makes twice in one thread that I've been confused...

Ok, because I was talking to an ex Navy guy who told me that he never shot an ILS or Loc untill he was flying 737s. He said the funny thing was that when he got his wings he was able to take a written test that gave him a commercial pilots license with instrument privledges without having actually done any of these approaches. I was just curious if this was still the case.

Well, there's military, and then there's the Navy...

I kid, I kid...

I don't know the particulars of his training or experience, but I would find it hard to believe that a Naval Aviator of today would have never flown an ILS approach. Granted, he may have flown less of them than the average Air Force PILOT... :) but he would have at least seen them in training and his time away from the boat.

Perhaps he was just exaggerating a bit... no, wait, Nasal Radiators, ummm, I mean Naval Aviators, never exaggerate. ;)

To answer your curiosity, no, I don't think that's the case today.

For the record, I never claimed nor accepted deity status. :)

And, you may not have noticed it, but I was a good guy for that thread, too.
