What is a good FBO in San Antone?

Im flying into KSSF (Stinson Municipal) and I have the choice between Sky Safety and San Antonio Aviation. Both have good reviews and same priced fuel.

Anybody have any experience with either of these FBOs?

Use the self-serve pumps, save some money. I spent many hours in the SAA offices, it's basically a converted mobile home. It's nice enough.

if you had to pick, which would you?

cause im seeing about the same thing, not much difference

I've never dealt with SkySafety, but they have a good reputation. SAA is family owned, and the boss-man once drove me and a student to meet someone to pick us up when the airport got shutdown for massive thunderstorms. It was late, and a little bit out of his way and he didn't have to do that.

If you're coming by yourself, use the selfserve (owned by skysafety) pumps and park in front of the tower.

If you're bringing Pax, then park at the SkySafety ramp. The SAA double wide is just fine, but you can do better.

they both sound like great FBOs. Idk how to pick

Sky Safety is really just a flight school. SAA is more of an fbo. There is a self serve pump on the north end of the field, and SAA has fuel trucks!

Where are you going while in San Antonio? There are a couple other fields north and north west of town. Of course there are fbo's at KSAT too(with very pricey fuel)!

Im gunna be going to Lackland AFB with HeyEng and staying with my sister who is also based outta Lackland. I picked KSSF cause it wasnt far from her house

any better suggestions of airports?

Garrad hangers at T89 (castroville) It might be a bit more of a drive, but I would go there b4 ssf...just my opinion! cheaper fuel too

He did mention that. Just time added to the flight I guess :laff:

I got a couple of weeks to figure it out I guess I'll just explore all the options.

Why do you say you'd fly there before SSF?

Stinson is a pain in the back side at times! there is a lot of student activity and even the air force at-6's do approaches there. Its not uncommon to have 5 in the pattern at a time. I really dont like it personally. When I fly with a student I try to go else where.

Castroville on the other hand is a quite little airport. Nice long runway, cheap gas, cheap parking. Its all about what you want. I really hate driving to stinson! I guess its more personal preference really!

I gotcha. Im used to dumb students and a busy pattern. All the airports in the area up here come to KTKI to practice pattern work with a tower. Its awful...

Gas at LZZ and go in to San Antonio Aviation. I fly in there every time I head down there, as it's very close to KSKF and also to my friend's house that I crash at when I visit my Reserve unit.

Sheesh, the T-6s in the pattern are a plus for me! Keeps me motivated! I also like to look out west and see a C-5 block out the sun. It's cool seeing a flight of Vipers flying a few miles to the west too, I guess.

They'll give you direct SAT VOR and then vectors (probably direct) SSF. You'll fly right over KSAT and (have your pax) snap some cool pictures.

Ed will hook you up. Rental car waiting, and all the good stuff. I don't think they have a minimum purchase, but I always pick up 8+ gallons for their hospitality.

Word for the wise: be careful in the "pilot trailer." They're not kidding when they say the water/sewage pipes can't handle much!

And for the love of God, go to TACOTACO and Chris Madrid's!!!!!!!!!!

why gas at LZZ? I like the sound of those restaurants though :bandit:

Ha! Interesting how things come up. I'm actually sitting in SAA's double wide right now waiting for the clouds to lift. We have been here since Thursday mapping and everybody here at SAA has been very friendly and helpful. The amenities certainly are not the greatest, but not the worst either.

That is an understatement. ATC has been frustrated every time we talk or listen to them. With the solo students who can't speak English and all the traffic in here, they seem to be very overwhelmed at times. 0.5 before we even got off the ground yesterday.
