What inspires you to become a controller?

I basically lived in ORD's tower. I can remember every Thursday night, when my dad worked the midnight shift, he would bring me and my brother to work with him. I always loved being in that tower - you could always see the Chicago skyline. Sleeping over in the tower was always fun.

It wasn't until recently that I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I have my father to thank for it.
 
Im sorry, but I have to call shenanigans on this one. If you are Bob Richards son, what are you doing on these posts other than trying to peddle his book? Your lines just appear to be far too cheesy for me...
 
I'm not peddling his book. I don't need to, the book has done very well. I actually recently took the ATSAT and came to this site to get an idea of what's going on with the application process and what not. I posted the link for any other controller who knew him. It's funny - I recieved a PM from some one that worked with him in Palwaukee, IL before he started work at O'Hare.
 
My dad is a controller at Indy center. Spent MANY nights there when I was growing up. Just got really interested from a young age and always wanted to try it (that's why I went military). Good thing is...I LOVE IT!!

And someone mentioned your dad's book sales. Just this side of astounding would probably cover it. He called me the other day and said he was out in Hollywood writing a screenplay for the darned thing.

See what a couple of years of being an ORD smark-aleck gets you. The rest of us are here talking to ourselves!

You trained him?

You have to tell me how he got the nickname "Calvin" when he worked there. I still don't understand it till this day. Was it ONLY because of the jeans?
 
ATLTRACON inspires me. I'm already cranky, I just need an ATC job to justify it. Pharmaceuticals just doesn't cut it anymore.

I have a close relative who works ATC here in Salt Lake City and he definitely inspires me. But, what inspires me most is the challenge controllers build it up to be and of course they speak/write from experience so I believe most of it. Being a family man, benefits are definitely an attraction.
