What information do ramp conrollers use to determin takeoff runways?

I sense that there is no common science among ramp controllers and the runways the disclose at pushback. Any insight besides wind would be appreciated.

I think the particular departure your on is a factor as well. In Denver we have to call up with our departure when calling for push.

When I was a ramp controller at ATL the “big” tower (ATC) would call and give us the departure split. We had a normal split and a couple other common variations. Then, when WX rolled in or traffic flow became an issue, we’d get abnormal combinations.

In DEN, your runway assignment is based on your departure fix. Of course this is based on good weather and normal operations. :)

In IAD when you call ramp for push you give them your first fix, which determines what runway you get. Important since you have to go east or west depending on the runway. My guess is tower gives ramp a running list of runways for each of the fixes.

Thats because they’re the worst ramp controllers since the dawn of Earth. Sorry CLT, I know you wanted the title.

Holden, Naomi and Alex are still bitching about Denver ramp controllers.
There are some ok ones on the A concourse, and also some terrible ones.

FLL does “okay.” “Remain this frequency!!!!1111”

PHL is a close runner up for worst. At least on F concourse.

“Who callin?” “Oh ok Bluestreak.... hmm... ok.. guess you can go to the gate then”

Funny ramp controller anecdote:

RJ lands on 31L at JFK and pulls off right at the entry for the old terminal 2 RJ horseshoe gates:

RJ: "Ramp RJ 321 approaching Mike Alpha."

Ramp: (yelling) "You are suppose to call me when you land to see if I can get you in!! Why didn't you call?!"

RJ: "We literally just pulled off the runway."

Ramp: "I don't care. You need to call me as soon as you land."

Meanwhile ramp in JFK is one of the worst. They meltdown every time there’s more than 2 planes ready to push.

At SFO, they don't. Pilots call and ask all the time for the runway, and if it was myself or the one other person there who actually knew what they were doing, we'd ask for the SID or destination and pass on what runway was most likely in a standard config. Using the 28s or 10s for departure, it is a total crap shoot and ATC often doesn't assign the runway(or changes it) when you approach depending on the finals and what planes ahead are doing(waiting for numbers, ground stop, ect. as there aren't penalty boxes down there). If you talked to any other ramp controllers or the other 2 ramp towers, you were SOL unless ground was quiet enough to ask and get something other than "I'm not talking to you yet STFU"(but you know, in ATC lingo).

Ground is so busy that I always suggested that the ramp towers SHOULD have the ATIS, expected runway, and even winds to cut down on ground chatter as they do at other major airports. These calls come in frequently on ramp all day. But while powers that be agreed it was a good idea, none were willing to figure out the bureaucracy to allow it, especially since management rolled their ideas of the other trained monkeys having to actually learn anything about aviation. And the other ramp tower which is airline-run scoffed at the idea. I figure other airports are likely just as dysfunctional.
