What happens to a drunk guy that diverts a flight??

That would be horrible.

Unless they're also going to do random drug tests with people going to eat at ice cream stands and buying books at Borders . . . it's just targeting the wrong people, and invading privacy.
 
For the Airline that I work the Gate and Ramp for, all we need is the "appearance" of intoxication to refuse service. The Ticket counter agents should catch them if they are showing up to the airport drunk and deny them. If they get drunk in a bar at the airport then the gate agent should catch them. If the make it past that since we are a regional that boards using aircraft stairs the Ramp agents can still catch them or the flight crew. Sadly it's usually left up to the Flight Attendants to spot them because our Gate agents are afraid of confrontation. I was not blessed with such social moors and get called all the time to deal with these people. The funniest one was a 21 year old college student who couldn't even stand and when I told him he wasn't going on the flight he called his mom and handed the phone to me. When I told her what was happening she told me to refund the ticket she bought him and make him buy his own way back to school. I love responsible parents.
 
In a real man's airplane (Beech 1900) one time when I was a FO we had one passenger going from BOS to RKD one day in April 2006

I board up the one passenger for the flight, he was not drunk at the time he sits down and takes his seat.

Halfway through the flight, he comes up to the cockpit (remember no cockpit door) sticks his head in with a half empty bottle of Jack in one hand and a Colt 45 in the other asking me and the Captain if we wanted a drink.

Give 'em the boot early. Because if you've got to drop 'em off mid-ocean, it changes everything.

I think most of the fines vary between $20K-$40K depending on the circumstances. It's NOT cheap.
 
THAT is one expensive drink! I can say those policeman took him off the plane so fast he probably didn't even know what hit him. Then, 3 hrs of paperwork :(
 
Actually, I'll betchya if the pilot spend anything more than about 45-90 minutes on the paperwork, he's a slow typer. ;)

I bounced a drunk in BRU a few months ago before pushback and it involved about 0 mins of paperwork. Haven't heard a thing since.
 
Maybe planes need a "Dr. Evil" type trap door. Just press the button for seat 21A and problem solved. Although it may be a violation of FAR 91.15 :nana2:

Aiden Mackle, 44, of Portadown, Co Armagh, was on board a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta, Georgia, to Dublin, had been drinking small bottles of wine when he allegedly became unruly, punching one of the cabin crew.
The pilot was eventually forced to divert the plane at Bangor, Maine, where Mackle was arrested by FBI agents.

Aiden Simon Mackle of Northern Ireland is accused of telling Delta Air Lines employees that he was a terrorist after drinking and becoming unruly on a flight from Atlanta, Georgia. The plane was diverted to Bangor International Airport, Maine, early on Saturday.
Court documents alleged Mackle punched an off-duty Delta employee and made threats about either hijacking or destroying the plane. Mackle, 44, will remain in jail pending a second hearing on Wednesday. He is charged with assault and interfering with a flight crew.

Send him to a federal pound me in the rear prison. Make an example of one or two of these jokers and it'll stop real fast.

I've done some really stupid things when I've been drunk but I've never thought it was a good idea to threaten to hijack an airplane.

This is like saying that making something illegal will make it stop. C'mon..murder comes with a really stiff penalty, and people do it anyway.

The people that do this are obviously a little whacked out to begin with, so no law or penalty is going to keep them from doing it.
 
What really surprises me is that airlines still serve alcohol on the airplanes. I know its good for revenue. Although i'm not a professional pilot I have seen numerous drunks boarding aircraft especially after a long layover.
 
I really have no problem with serving alcohol on aircraft.

Here's the kicker. There are a number of alcohol-involved situations, but there are also a large number of people on the aircraft that are on some type of drug that have problems as well.

Alcohol usually isn't the problem as much as the personality of the person involved.
 
Silly idiot....serves him right. It took all I had not to "accidentally" trip him on his classy departure off the plane...

I don't know.

Remember the joker who took a dump on a serving cart? If doing so resulted in him spending a few years where he wouldn't be taking dumps because someone was pounding him in the rear, the next guy who wanted to do something like that might not do it.

Sure, there are still going to be people who do stupid things anyway. But they'll pay up the ying yang and it will serve as a deterrent for many.

There are lots of things I'd like to do when I'm drunk that I don't do because I know I'd end up spending time getting acquainted with a 8x8 cell. And I know this even though I'm so drunk I'm having a hard time standing!
