What happened to the land line?

Something with your FANS system? I remember seeing something a couple of years ago with our 777s and an issue with KUSA. Don't remember if it's resolved or not.
From my understanding it's coming with an update to the software. So you might be right.

I actually got to hear the landline on a tour of ZFW.

The tour itself was pretty informative. It was two hours - an hour of ground and an hour in the center controller workstations.

ZFW Pilot Outreach to sign up for a tour.

I was more interested in what CPDLC looked like from the controller point of view. I rarely ever talk to ATC and just text them…

It was very neat seeing the aircraft send a CPDLC request, it shows up as a symbol on the aircraft tag. The controller does some tic-tacking on the keyboard and the symbol changes on the aircraft tag showing the uplink, the symbol changes again when the aircraft accepts or unables the uplink.

All while other aircraft are checking in and he’s ack-ing the aircraft check on.

I remember my CFI forcing me to call the FSS and checking my notes on my knee pad before I got signed off for my first long cross country. Yeah, Bakersfield could be unpredictable because of the Tule fog and Santa Barbara was a much better option.

I think tower/tracon/center tours should be mandatory part of pilot training. If not PPL def IFR. Conversely, the FAA needs to bring flight deck training back asap. (And eliminate the clean shave rule).

CONUS CPDLC is the s***. Even better if you happen to be following someone for hours who is without it, so you already have the next freq dialed in. Ultimate laziness unlocked
It’s even better when the airplane tunes the next frequency for you and you don’t have to know what the frequency is.

I was quite spoiled by the Airbus and then going to the Boeing I was like what the plane doesn’t tune the radio for you? What kind of BS is this?

The ZFW controller said they’ve been trying to get “monitor” implemented so that when you get the. Handoff there’s no check in required you just switch frequencies but it’s held up by the requirement for the controller to verify your altitude so it will be a while before you can just monitor the frequency change

That will be the bomb. Cross the US without saying a single word on the radio. Plane autotuned the radios for you and all you have to do is press ACCEPT and transfer button.

Makes for boring live ATC YouTube videos when there’s no audio

the only time you want auotune is for jamming/spoofing, at least for Rockwell Collinz
