What does the word "training" mean...

Upon further review, Midlife is correct; they don't have to be VFR conditions. They DO need to be dual instruction, however. Also, the 300 mile solo cross country does not necessarily have to be solo
Could you elaborate on "solo" because I was hoping to take my wife with me on mine but didn't know if I could.

You can't. Look at the definition of solo flight time in 61.51 (yep, same reg as before to answer flight time logging questions).

What I think Mike is referring to is the language in the 61.129 requirements that calls for
==============================
...hours of solo flight time in a multiengine airplane or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor (either of which may be credited towards the flight time requirement ...)
==============================

Originally a reaction to insurance requirement for multis, it's been expanded to apply to all commercial solos. The training benefit intended is learning multi-crew CRM.

Not intended as a flame, but if you're looking at becoming a commercial pilot, the ability to at least find things - especially those very basic things that apply directly to you - becomes increasingly important.

I have never thought of bringing a CFI along to practice CRM.....not a bad idea at all. Especially for the COmm certs.
