What do you need to rack up Flight time?

[ QUOTE ]
Are most 4-yr. degrees really useful without some experience in the given field?

I mean, just having a psychology degree isn't going to allow you to become a psychologist the day after you get furloughed.

Personally, it was a tradeoff for me. If I had gone to school for something that I wasn't remotely interested in, I would probably have screwed off and accomplished nothing. Instead, I went for something that interested me, and I've been pretty successful so far.

So what do I have to fall back on if I lose my medical? Probably the same things as Joe Schmoe with his basketweaving degree.

Yeah, well...don't like it too much. Its not a very popular line of thinking.

Hey now...I was a philosophy major. As people said before, what difference does it make if you aren't going to stay in your field anyway? At least philosophy teaches critical thinking skills...

My enlistment in the Marine Corps is almost up. So I have been trying to think of what I am going to do when i get out. I am working on my PPL right now and should have it completed before my EAS.

So here is my problem. Should I take out loans for the 35 thousand dollars it is going to cost to go to one of these flight academies and get all my ratings at once. Then use my Mongomery GI bill to pay for a local college back home and try to CFI and go to school at the same time.

OR should I just go to one of the 4 year College Programs that some schools offer and get my ratings more slowly but would probably be able to cut my out of pocket expenses a bit?

[/ QUOTE ]

In your last post didn't you say you have a wife and kids and are worried about having enough money to pay for the Academy’s? (Or repay there loans) Again, you should think about the 4-year school that will allow you to graduate with a bachelors degree, (something you really really need) use your VA benefits, and get low interest Stafford/Government, maybe even some scholarships.

Oh yah, some day I want to run a Motel 6. Screw flying and seeing the world.

Its all about free shampoo and conditioner

[/ QUOTE ]

Nah. Degree as a manager at Motel 6, Holiday Inn, Ramada etc means you're OVER qualified. A degree in hotel management is your ticket to Ritz/Carlton, high-end Hilton and Marriots, and the Four Seasons. Those guys (esp if they work concierge) make FAT bank.

PhilosopherPilot,

Both me and stultus majored in philosophy (or at least I will have once I graduate in a year and a half). Not knocking it, just saying.

And our philosophy degree's are any more useful?

When asked what you could do with a degree in philosophy, Bruce Lee responded, "You can think long thoughts about being unemployed."

A philosophy degree is probably a lot more useful than a degree in aeronautical science!

At least you can ponder life's complexities whereas an air science guy like myself tries to blame 'coriolis effect' for the world's evils.

...so you're saying this ISN'T the cause of the world evils?

The best degree I ever heard was the lady on letterman that said she was majoring in "Renaissance Literature". But what the hey! A four year degree is just that! You could always end up on the History Channel!

Just in the sub-equitorial regions.
