I hate those stupid local newspaper sites that require registration. If I registered at every site in order to view an article I'd be getting spam from 1,487 different local newspapers from all around the country.

I don't know diddly about UND or going to an aviation college, but I do know dthat if you go to a prestigious school, they won't give you core credit for similar classes at a lesser school. I went to a top-ranked school, and in my major (mechanical engineering) it was basically impossible to go abroad because my school would only take transfer credit for core classes from an institution that was even better-ranked. You could fill up on useless electives, but that doesn't help you graduate. At my school, in my major, you were almost definitely signing yourself up for an extra semester or more of work to get the diploma.

so what are we talking about here? transferring to Yale from UND? or to UND from Yale?

UND will take anyone with a pulse and an open wallet. I know. I got into the aviation program with a 1.17 GPA. WOOOO!
 
Yeah, if he goes from UND to a really prestigious school, they may not take credits for any core classes, even if the material is exactly the same.

Going the other way hopefully shouldn't be a problem, if the curriculum is similar. If he goes from UND to a community college, then they will most likely count all of his credits if the course descriptions and requirements match up.

It's true that most aviation classes are useless unless you're going to transfer to an aviation school. The most they will do is fill in for electives. But the gen eds generally transfer over fine. An english for an english, or a math for a math. As long as they cover the topic then it will probably transfer. UND is accredited and that's really all that matters.

Yeah I do see a gripe with ATC on the end that if you do get into the academy or wash out you are out of luck pretty much. So maybe a person would just be better off to take ATC classes if they think it would help.

So it looks like +1 for Entrepreneurship because it might teach me how to run my own business which is something I have always wanted out of life. Also, it opens up the opportunity for an MBA because it is a business degree. It seems like since I am basically knocking out generals so far, going for the most well rounded degree is the best option.

People have said to leave UND all together, but at this point am not totally ready to make that decision considering I have friends here and get Minnesota reciprocity. Und also does seem to have options outside of aviation.

Now the next question is, do I at least get my PPL here if financial aid ever decides to do their job and allocate me the money I need? If not does anyone know of any good FBO's?

I think there is only flight support in Grand Forks but I hear there is one in Crookston with a cheap warrior. It would probably be cheaper to get your private outside of UND. Almost 10k here where you could probably do it for around 6-8

...But you'd still be stuck doing the 112, (10 flights / 2 GBs iirc)... that's a good 2500-3000 right there...

Buy a share into a used 172 or Warrior, and befriend a freelance CFI ... A friend of mine back home in Toronto went thru his training, up to CFI (minus MEI) in 13 months and only paid $9000CAD for all his flying.

It ain't no G1000 cessna... but rather a 1968 172M... but it gets the job done!
 
Does anyone know what exactly UND's policy is towards CFI's? UND can't fire them or something for teaching on the side can they? I am in a fraternity here so I have connections so that could be an option for a discounted rate

No they cant fire them.

UND flight instructors may accept secondary employment outside of UND flight instruction as long as the secondary employment does not interfere or conflict with the regular duties and responsibilities of a UND flight instructor. CFI's employed outside of UND must adhere to the duty day requirements listed in the UND saftey policies and procedures.

This sounds like a great plan. It's what I would have done in college if I knew what I know now.

As far as ATC goes, the FAA is still hiring off the street, and they look for people with aviation experience. Even if you don't major in ATC, you still have a good chance of becoming a controller assuming the FAA keeps putting out PUBNATs.
