Man, all these closings..

I wonder what else I can do with my life...

A buddy of mine is a plumber.. Makin' $130K a year..............

I'm not leavin'. I am fortunate enough to love what I do and can't imagine working in another industry.

Money is great and all, but cliched as it is, it ain't everything. I make far more money as a cube monkey in I.T. than I would starting out in aviation, but the cube life sucks......

I would much rather make less money doing something I enjoyed than what I am doing now. Unfortunately I am a ##### to my job. Due to my lack of financial wizardry, I cannot afford to quit. :banghead:

I'm going home to live with mom, and then figure it out from there. j/k
All these airlines going down the tube, we ALL better smell the coffee and come up with plan B.

Everyone needs to have a backup plan. I don't care what job you've got, what industry you're in, or how good your performance reviews and career path are.

Have a backup plan.

A few years ago, you'd think that having an audit job at a big six accounting firm would have been safe and secure, right? After all, they're always going to need audits. And you were with a big six firm, so you had a long list of clients. If one went away, they'd just assign you to a new one.

Well, if you were working for Arthur Andersen when Enron blew up, you'd be wrong.

It would be the family business for me: real estate. Amazingly, even with the down market, my father is still doing great in real estate here in tha ATL. I'm sure I could never be the salesman that he is, but I could scrape by. Already in the process of getting the real estate license just in case. :(

:yeahthat: Working in the cube farm is by far the worst best paying job I have ever had.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: it is absolutely amazing what people will do to be able to fly an airplane.

tens of thousands of dollars spent on flight training...

years spent slogging it out in the trenches building up qualifications...

tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars of lost income along the way...

the absences from home, the weekends worked, the holidays missed...

the furloughs, the bankruptcies, the huge life adjustments when one has to start over again

and after all that, when you finally make it to the big time, you still have to worry about having a "back-up plan" "just in case"

And yet there are still people who say "I love what I do, and I can't imagine doing anything else"

There are easier ways to make a better living. And the only reason you can't imagine something else is because you don't allow yourself to.

After 10 years in the business, I finally allowed myself to consider the possiblity that maybe, just maybe, there might be something else out there I might enjoy doing. Turns out I was right.

To those who "can't imagine doing anything else," I say go out and take a look. You might just be surprised.

You're not really a pilot unless you are *constantly* trying to figure out the answer to the OP's question.

Honestly, I'm not really sure. I try to consider what other careers I would enjoy like I do aviation, but I cannot find any. I've been looking towards other paths in the aviation industry outside the airlines, whether it be as a pilot or in some other capacity. Doing something in Human Factors really interests me, but those jobs are hard to find.

I've also considered Federal Law Enforcement, following in my Dad's footsteps. It's just hard to imagine not flying though.

As of right now, I'm going to stick with my airline career. However, I'm starting to be aware of other opportunities now that I wasn't paying attention to previously.

And if you had no choice?
Supports the reason behind a lot of folks stating to "have a backup plan/career" and/or go to college and make that your backup! :D

if i was a pilot and had to think of another career, i think i'd go with TSA or Air Marshal....that way i could still boss the other pilots around :D

Hopefully, by the time my management team runs my airline into the ground while standing in the rubble saying "What happened?" I'll be competitive for another flying position.

That being said, if that doesn't happen, I'll do one of two things: go back to SWA as a ramper or continue with the current building of my back-up plan as a zookeeper. Like I said before, I'm not really in a rush to shovel elephant and giraffe poop.

Not many.
:yeahthat:
:yeahthat: Add in India, Middle East, China, 135 cargo, and corporate, and opportunities are endless. PLENTY of flying jobs still out there.

I bet he's not working for nobody but himself...Its not like everybody can or wants to open a plumbing business.

And if you had no choice?
See above, plenty of opportunities out there.

Everyone needs to relax and calm down. A few small airlines that were in trouble even before 106 dollar oil close and people start acting like aviation Armageddon. Just chill...til the next espisode:)

You can become a FA for that! Man, there are some bossy ones out there! :p

Putting the ugly, ugly side of prof aviation - furloughs and layoffs - aside for a second...

My roommate has a new professional level job. The dude leaves for work at 6:30am, doesn't get back until around 9:30p. 5 days a week, and sometimes does biz meetings on the weekends. He's about the same age as I am, college education, etc.

Don't know how much he makes, but I'd be surprised if it's much more than what I'm pulling as a 2nd year regional FO. Last month I had 18 days off and used my benefits to go to Israel and Ireland for next to nothing. I think he had something like 6 days off.

Work sucks. But I think it could be a lot worse. For some workers abroad, work IS their life. They put in 14hr days, 7 days a week, and make hardly anything in USD. Made me feel all the lazier talking to them.

Or maybe I've had to much kool-aid since this post wasn't 100% negative ;)
