What are the airline nicknames?

I'll listen to a center frequency with students sometimes and I'll say, "see Cactus, that's America West." Then they ask what's Southwest. "Uh I dunno, just Southwest I think."
Then they'll ask , "What's United?"

And I'm like, "I dunno, put in some right rudder please."

Yea always wanted to find out what TED's call sign is.

I have heard that it is called

A.) TED

B.)Teddy Ruxpin

Not sure bout that last one as it came from an unreliable source.

Seriously just think it is called:TED

But if anyone knows lemme know.

If 'Ted' operates under United Airlines operating certificate (as I belive it does), it would use "United" as it's call sign.

Just as "Song" flights are operated by Delta Air Lines, under Delta's operating certificate, and they use "Delta" as their call sign.

Are you asking about callsigns or nicknames?

Callsigns are easy, nicknames may be too vulgar to post here.

That's boring....Song and TED should operate under ummm

Or something clever like "Cactus".

My favorite nickname for Southwest: ..."Corndog".
I always use it when I get the chance...

"SkyWest 3645 position and hold Runway 24L, and report the departing Southwest 737 in sight, caution wake turbulence."

"Position and hold 24L, got the Corndog in sight, SkyWest 3645"

Usually, always get's a hardy har har from the southwest crew.

The AIM has a few of them, mostly the popular airlines.

It is amazing what you find when you actually read through that book.

Hmmm...but there's no Southwest Airlines (USA) on the list, only Canada & Japan airlines are referenced! Anyone got any leads on the call sign for Southwest Airlines?

Thanks,

JR

I've always wondered what the "Candler" link is to Atlantic Southeast? Anybody know?

[/ QUOTE ]

I believe the guy that started the airline was named Candler. I also heard his first name was Asa. Haven't substantiated that yet, but if that's the case, talk about an ego maniac.

Actually, Asa Candler was the founder of Coca Cola. He bought the formula from a local drug store owner for like $2000 dollars. I think when he cashed out he got 25mil. Not a bad deal. I would guess ASA uses it as they are based out of Atlanta (the home of Coke, as someone already posted) as well as they happen to share letters with the guys first name. What I want to know is why is it coCa cola but coKe when we shorten it?

Yeah, Candler was just pulled from some Atlanta history when they needed a new call sign. When ASA started they went by the call sign A-S-O. This caused some misunderstandings on the frequency, say it fast a few times. Then they went to A-SEE. Then it changed to Candler, never heard why.
