What are Q airways?

I was looking, but couldn't find any info about what they are.

actually, if you know, i'd appreciate when G and A (and B) airways are used as well lol thx!

I had a 'Q' route the other day and needed to look it up myself. It is simply a designator for an RNAV route (GPS). I believe the other letters were as well, but can't remember off the top of my head.

AIM 5-3-4 sheds some light on G, A, R and B airways. They're a remnant of the old colored airway system that now only exsist in Alaska and some other spots. From what I could find Green and Red run East and West where as Blue and Amber run North South. The kicker was that they are all plotted in brown lol.

Go to skyvector.com, search for GEP, and then hit the "Enroute H-2" button on the top of the viewing area. All those blue routes there are Q routes. I think there's a few low-altitude ones down in northern Florida, but I'm too lazy to look at the moment :)

there was a bunch near KPDX, I was doing a flight sim flight, and thats when I noticed it... looks like they are 1 way routes

so these are used when you do a RNAV flight eh

on skyvector, go to MCF. to the W you will see the A/B routes and whatnot... who can fly those? what equipment do I need? I know Q is for RNAV, so GPS is good enough, but what about those A/B airways?

Nope. RNAV actually means random area navigation which is anything but "ground based" navigation such as VOR, NDB.

GPS, LORAN, INS, and the old fashioned VOR/DME RNAV boxes, are all considered RNAV.

Q Routes are GPS only airways.

Gosh, you're smart.

I know. what are you up to nowadays?

Consulting for a casino here in Vegas, paying off debt, and flying on weekends. In that order out of necessity, not desire.

Oh, and when time permits, looking for a man wearing MY jackets, using MY laptop, and documenting his travels with MY camera.
