we\'ve said it would happen...

Well, you guys remember how we've always said it would be easier to just smash a car into an airport or park one full of explosives outside...well some yahoo in FLL did it, he crashed his SUV into a Southwest ticket counter which was fortunatly vacant at the time...Imagine if his car had had some explosives or something in it...

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Michigan man drove his sport utility vehicle into a crowded terminal building at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Sunday, but only the driver was hurt, officials said.

Alex Vila, 33, of Williamston, Mich., was taken into the custody of Broward County sheriff's officials after he ran from his SUV following the crash. Sheriff's spokesman Hugh Graf said investigators didn't know why he drove his 1998 Lincoln Navigator into the Terminal 3 building shortly before 10 a.m.

"That's something only he can answer," Graf said.

The SUV slammed into a Southeast Airlines ticket counter and smashed through a wall before stopping. Two sheriff's deputies and a federal air marshal tackled Vila as he tried to escape and took him into custody, Graf said.

Vila was brought to Broward General Medical Center to have minor scrapes treated and was being questioned there, Graf said. Any charges against Vila were pending the outcome of an investigation.

Airport officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Southeast Airlines operations were not affected by the crash, and no one was at the counter at the time, said Milton Corchado, director of in-flight operations for the airline.

Yep, saw that on the news last night

Homeland Security at its best

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

You know that I like to slam Homeland [in]Security but I honestly am not sure what they can do about this. If we want to live in a free country, we can't stop every car and truck to see what's going on. We don't have the resources to do that anyway.

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

I agree with you Tony . . . I just think it's ashame that this Department along w/ TSA was put into place to protect us, but at best it can just give the people a false image of protection/security.

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

yup, i don't know what anyone could have done to prevent this, but like people have been saying for a while, if someone wanted to attack an airport it would be a lot easier to do it with a van/ryder truck filled with explosives than with an airplane...

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

It probably has something to do with the fact he was from Michigan. (j/k Emily)

It's a TSA conspiracy.

They made up an airline. Stocked a ticket counter with made-up signs. Hired a Michigan dofus to ram his car into it, and the end result is the TSA gets broader powers and more authority.

How else do you explain crashing a car all the way into a terminal building during a holiday weekend, ramming a ticket counter, and there are no injuries? No passengers at the ticket counter 'cause it's a made-up airline, of course!

Now the TSA will get rights into the state's database of driver's licenses and will have monitors at airport toll plazas cross-checking against a terrorist data base. 1984, but 20 years late.

I believe they are based at Clearwater, FL and also fly out of Ft. Lauderdale, along with other places.

All right. Slower this time.

The TSA wants to take over many of the duties that the FBI currently performs regarding all internal security issues even remotely connected to Transportation.

For example, they have done preliminary feasibility studies recruiting homeless men (all former Viet Vets, of course), to act as armed "Road Marshalls" and "Rail Marshalls" on the bus and train systems. These men will be the first line of defense against terrorist attacks on these modes of transportation.

Regarding today's event in Florida, the motive is obvious. The TSA has been grumbling ever since some of the parking and vehicle access restrictions (put in place immediately following 9/11) were rescinded or lowered. The TSA's goal is to require all personal vehicles to park at small remote lot locations (no more than 100 vehicles per lot to restrict potential damage of an attack on those sites), and all airport workers and passengers to be transported to the terminal building on remote controlled buses or trains. TSA will have direct control of those vehicles, and they will be equipped with retina scanning and fingerprint recognition devices. TSA will require those vehicles to have self-destruct capability in the case of a hostile take-over via RF remote control devices.

The *supposed* attack today was one of the first stages in the TSA plan to stir up the public's fear of attack via personal vehicle. The end culmination of this induced phobia is a clear path to the TSA's end goal of complete security domination inside the borders of the US of A.

Clear now?

They can not be doing very well if their counter is empty on July 4th.

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

This is going a few years back but I would see Southeast in LGA every once in a while. I think they tried to make a go of some limited scheduled service but have since gone back to their 'roots' of charter flying.

Funny how I live 15 minutes away from FLL and didn't hear anything about the story. What a dumb#ss.lol

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

I wasn't surprised this happened in Florida. I was surprised it was not a senior citizen. I remember one year back in the 80's we had two ticket counters in Florida run into by cars. It was standard Florida scenario, senior approaches front curb, gets confused and hits the "brake", car accelerates, steps on the "brake" harder, car goes even faster. Crash.

Remeber up at ORD a few years ago a senior did that and killed a few people in front of the terminal.

Moral of the story, if in Florida and at street side cafe don't sit at table next to curb.

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

many times here in south Florida we've had senior citizens run into postal offices and restaurants. They usually say that they confused the brakes with the gas pedal.

Re: we\'ve said it would happen...

I dont see where this is any more a terror threat then someone driving an SUV full of explosive into a busy street corner. B/c it happend at an airport, people freak. AIrport security is for "Airplane" security.
