WestJet shows there is still a bit of magic left in flying

My hat is off to Westjet. They made Christmas extra special for a lot of people. What a terrific way to think about their customers. Well done!

Watching this video again and thinking about airline ads, I realize every airline spends a hefty lump of change on marketing. The decision to do this and award random customers who are probably flying you because you were the cheapest way home in a way that they'll never forget compared to just embellishing your product speaks volumes about the company. Other airlines should take note.

And the most effective, there is no better marketing tool these days than building positive social buzz and letting true, organic dissemination work it's magic. It may have cost them 20k to buy all those presents, but they earned 400 new ambassadors for life who then went out and tweeted, caused re-tweets, posted it on FB, generating shares and likes, posted it on message boards, texted and called all their friends. No ad campaign can beat this, especially for the price. Well done!

I'd like to say it was done for the people, I am sure there was certainly a strong push for it internally realizing they could positively impact peoples lives, but the question most likely asked to prompt this was something along the lines of "What is our holiday campaign and how will we include social media, we have a budget of..."

No doubt, but the decision to spend the budget of X on xmas gifts for real people in this manner is still very worthy of being commended.

I think its safe to say many of those on this site, having seen this, will now bring it up to their crew next time they cross paths with a Westjet plane at an airport.

Oh, I completely agree.

I also think that it's entirely possible that I have become jaded from years in a large corporate setting where every marketing decision we make has a profit motive. I sometimes forget that there are in fact companies out there that make decisions based on how it will make people feel and only then decide to build a campaign. No the other path of coming up with the best way to reach a revenue goal and then come up with a way to spin it in a positive light, if it can be spun at all.

Regardless of motive, West Jet and it's employees should be commended.
