Western Michigan University

I miss Kalamazoo dearly. To me, it's a nearly perfect city. It's not too big, not too small (a little over 100,000). It's a few hours from Detroit, and a few hours from Chicago with a train line going between the two and making a stop in Kalamazoo. It's got the best beer in the world (Bells), and as somebody mentioned there are tons of hot women there.

I fully agree with jtrain here. I wish I could go back to the Kzoo area, it's a truly great town, if a little big for my tastes.

Western as a school treated me well. I graduated from a top (un)ranked program (they don't rank undergraduate philosophy courses, so to judge the quality of a program, as far as I'm concerned, you need to look at graduate and post graduate programs. Western's has an 8th ranked masters program in philosophy), had TONS of fun in the marching band, had a decent job working at the computer labs at Western, and made lots of great friends.

I wish I majored in philosophy - it's a deeply interesting subject. Western has some great programs in other subjects too, like theater, finance, film and video production, among many others. Don't just limit yourself to flight science. Also, you can major in something else and still fly at Western, so look into that.

I also made many great friends at Western, and had a great time with on-campus organizations like Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and the WMU Flight Team.

If I could, I'd move back to Kalamazoo tomorrow. It's not just a decent college to plant yourself at for a few years, but it's also in a great town.

I agree. If I could go back to Three Rivers and work in Kalamazoo, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Didn't know they killed the 61 program. That stinks...They definately need to bring it back in this market.

How was Grossman to deal with when you were there?

I didn't even know you could get rid of a part 61 program. Other than simply not allowing it. Hmm... Were they not getting enough of the 141 graduations for licenses due to too many 61'rs?

Eastern Student here --

I heard WMU had a 2 year wait on beginning to fly, I heard that may have been lifted, but I'm not entirely sure. The cost to fly over there is through the roof because of their great idea to train in Cirrus.

I wish you luck and if you have a chance, come check out our program.

But dude, then you've gotta live Ypsi! I mean seriously dude, Ypsitucky?

I shouldn't bag too much, it looks more and more like I'm gonna be living in Ypsi in about 3 months.

As Bandit said, I was also a '99 grad and the program has changed a lot since then. Back then we had C-172Rs, Extra 300s, Seneca IVs, and Mooney M20R. WMU is a good school with a nice campus and Kalamazoo is a fun town - lots to do there. I would agree with what the others said and add another recommendation. I went to 3 semesters of Community College (general studies) and then transferred all those credits to WMU (and also got a couple of transfer scholarships). Make sure you go to WMU first and ask which classes you can take at your CC however. This saved me a boatload of money, the aviation program is expensive enough as it is. If money's not an issue for you then I would again reiterate what the others said and get your general studies out of the way and save the flying and Battle Creek aviation classes for your junior/senior years (that will cut down on the driving). The instructor quality at WMU is very good and the facilities are nice as well. Good luck in your decision. :D

well thanks you guys for all your help! As i said before i am pretty sure that i whant to go to WMU. I have talked to a few people that went there and they all had nothing but good things to say about their flight program. So i am verry excited about my college future!

You will definately have a great time at WMU. You may want to consider joining Alpha Eta Rho (aviation frat) and/or the flight team. They have an excellent flight team and you can get some free flight time.

A tip on your flight lessons. Get your cash set a side first so you don't have to start and stop. Also, try and study as much as possible ahead of time for you lessons. You will get through your lessons faster and save some cash. It is easy to blow .6 or more on ground instruction on every flight if your are not prepared. Make the most out of your six pack flying time as it will now be limited to the twins.

One last tip...Schedule early morning flight slots if you can. They don't fill up as fast and you will generally have better weather in the summer months.

Lastly, you will want to check out The University Roadhouse (bar and restaurant, the Pilsner club (if it is still there) to try the beers of the world, and Belle's in the Battle Creek. Lastly, for a great steak and place to take a date (if you have the cash) Porters Steak House in Battle Creek on Capital Ave is very good.

Good luck and we're here if you have any questions.

University Roadhouse is still there, or at least it was the last time I was in Kalamazoo. I dunno if you've been back recently, but they nixed West Michigan Ave. right where it was. Now it curves down around and onto Stadium from a different angle so you can't get stuck on those railroad tracks. There's still a road to get to the Roadhouse, but it's a little bit strange for me because it almost seems out of the way now.

I haven't been back in a couple of years. It seems like everytime I do go back somthing major has changed.

What are you going to be doing when you get back to this side of the state? If you want a 727 tour let me know..

Holy Crap! That is up there....

I think my instate classes were only 100 something per hours..

AVS 325 was the most expensive with a 10K lab fee.

State universities in Michigan are a complete scam. When I got to Western it was $140 a credit hour, when I graduated it was up to $300 a credit hour if you only took 12 credit hours a semester.

100%, complete, scam, and that was in state!
