Western Michigan University

I was looking at Western Michigan University's site, it looks like a very good school. I want to go for my BS in Aviation and it looks like they have a good program with alot of airplanes. I also like the big college setting with a big football team....but the most important thing is how good the aviation school is.......and insight would be greatly appreciated!!

I graduate in December with a degree in philosophy. Aviation program is ok, football team is better than it has been, and we'll be good again a few years, and there are a sh*t ton of hot chics here.

But I wouldn't come from out of state, the cost ain't worth it.

I flew with Slamma (aka Mike). He mostly does instrument stuff. Big Daddy, as I call him, is an awesome guy. I love WMU but I feel they drag everything on.

Private took 6 months, Instrument took 9 months, complex endorsement took 2 months, still working on my single engine commercial. I had to wait 2 months to get a seat in the arrow. You will wait at least a month for either an arrow or a multi ofr which ever commercial you do first. You can do single engine with multi add on or other way around.

I am going to ATP in florida in May to get my MEI, CFI, and CFII for $7,000 in 14 days. With WMU, it'll take you at least 2 months for your CFI. They drag things on forever. However, the rate for planes is awesome.

I was thinking of going there. Looks good, they just got new Cirrus SR-22s (get some ass in that w/ all those bangn chicks). I got info on the college and someone recomended it to me, He did say it dragggggged on though. as for out of state, the man I talked to said to set up residence 6 months before so your a resident and get a job. Looks good though.

:) Just messing around:) But hey did you see the interior in that thing?

Sorry to bring back a "thread from the dead", but im just curious if WMU brings people through flight instructor ratings. Also hows the social life there.

I go to western and, uhh, i would have to say don't go to western. This school has screwed me over in so many ways. You can't fly till your sophmore year and if you come from out of state it's more expensive than riddle. The school itself is ok, great social life, ok classes, great surrounding city. Parking sucks bigtime. You WILL be towed at least once while you're here and the parking services nazis just LOVE to give you tickets.
If you like where your from then go to school instate and save money. If you're like me and think your home state SUCKS and wanna go to school out of state then check out UND (affordable, good flying,) Purdue (expensive, hard to get into), or Arizona State (not as cheap, a lot more fun.) DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT go to Embry-Riddle!

Edit: Western does have a cfi option, but it's not part of the professional flight degree and it will cost you a lot more money. It's done part 61 at battle creek airport.

I was looking at UND actually even applied there, but i pulled my app as it seemed too expensive, I dont know why everyone hates Embry, is it just daytona that sucks or are both really bad. 34K a year, it better be good! I like the big city enviroment, thats why i like WMU, i've hear UND is a big campus like that, but its sooo cold in ND. FSU, here in NY is about 30K all inclusive, but WMU is like 38K all inclusive, too much for me, if i can ill transfer to UND or Embry next year, preferably presscot, i hear its nice down there.

if you think WMU and UND are "too expensive", your going to want to cross Embry off your list too... Embry is at least 2 or even 3 times the normal university price.

Embry Riddle has you totaling 180k including flight fees for the four years. That amount does not include textbooks and living expenses. I say stay away from Embry Riddle.

Western isn't bad if you're in state.

Out of state and you might as well go to Riddle. Tuition for out of state students at Western is about $500 a credit hour. So just in tuition alone you're looking at $61,500 for 123 credit hours (which I think is how many you need for a flight degree). Tack on $10,000 a year in room and board and you're looking at around $100,000. Then we'll say that you manage to come in with flight fee's being only $40,000 and you're looking at what you will walk out of Western with, debt wise.

I love Western, but I'd NEVER pay to go there if I were out of state. Heck, I wouldn't pay out of state tuition ANYWHERE if I were an undergraduate.
