Welp, that sucks...

You're both right! FDIO went down, followed shortly by both channels of ERAM. And guess what? DARC wasn't ready to go either!

For you non-ATCers, the LAN went down, followed shortly by Windows 95. We tried to boot to DOS, but didn't get the command prompt to come up!
I try to pay attention when my source in the Tech Center is talking, but I kind of glaze over.

This is what usually happens in my head when SoCal won't answer after three or four tries. "Oh great, they just slid off into the ocea.........sorry I was on the land land some one checking in?" Being based in LGB, I know it's going to happen to me one day. :)

When that happens just hope you've got enough fuel to make the Nevada coast.

Was out at a concert last night with one of my old Center go workers. He explained to me what the ERAM people had told them. He said it was a U2 that caused the problem with their long flight plans...he said basically it was so long that it caused the computer to run out of memory so it crashed.

We came across this when that 787 did that giant 787 in the sky, so they made a bunch of separate flight plans so it wouldn't crash the system.

So the guys $600 iPad had no issues with the flight plan but the FAA computers crashed?

Are there plans to replace these machines with something that has a little more computing power? Maybe move up to a 486, or possibly really splurge and start running something along the lines of a Pentium 200?

We were told not to put VFR or OTP as a hard altitude without an actual altitude, for example VFR/125, in a flightplan or the system (ERAM) will crash. Got a verbal brief on that last night, and the supe said they thought that was what caused the problem. But, I'm located on the other coast, so who knows.

So basically what iam hearing the 1960s designed NAS Stage-A system we HAD was more capable then this 2000s designed ERAM pos and not only did they loose all the flight data but both main and standby radar systems and to top if off because most idiot centers controllers were so eager to get rid of the paper strips because of URET they didn't have a quick way to transition to non radar. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Priceless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention this system has been taking four times as long to roll out than originally specified...and surprisingly it cost more too...weird.

When It first started being used at ZSE, Data blocks would unpair from the target if the controller turned the airplane more than 30 degrees. There were many more simply ridiculous things happening in the beginning as well. One time when I was working the ERAM decided that it wanted to remove a flight plan for a Emirates dude going to Dubai from the west coast. Good thing my buddy in flight data had the flight plan sitting in some file that he could fax to the Canadians.

Well back in 1984 my first week at ZAU I was told that we would have a new Center ATC system called ISSS before I would finish training...............well 14 years and 3.5 billion dollars later all we got was a square radar display and shorter strips, so been there don't that!

Heres a video of first night DSR went on line at ZAU, can you see the enthusiasm I have for this lovely gift for the FFA.

@queeno When were you at ZAU? I don't know if his operating initials were RD, but his legit initials were - first name Robert, I'll txt last name later - good friend of mine and helped me our years ago with some career advice (lol). Just wonder if you two may know each other.

Was there from June 1984 to November 2004, Initals don't sound familiar but its been a long time, and if he was there prior to 2004 he would have at least head of me................ I was rather lets say well known !!!!

I got the same brief as S60, VFR or OTP must have a hard altitude or the whole thing crashes.

While we're talking about the ancient versions of windows that are run in facilities I saw this gem last week and happened to take a picture.

Yup, parts of our system are DOS.
