Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape Dispute

By RAY RIVERA AND ANDY NEWMAN
Updated, 3:49 p.m. | A JetBlue flight attendant apparently upset with an uncooperative passenger on a just-landed flight unleashed a profanity-laden tirade on the public-address system, pulled the emergency-exit chute, slid off the plane and fled Kennedy International Airport, a law enforcement official said.

The dramatic getaway was short-lived. The attendant, Steven Slater, 39, was arrested at his home not far away in Belle Harbor, Queens. He was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

The contretemps unfolded as JetBlue flight 1052 from Pittsburgh landed at Kennedy around noon — on time — with a full load of 100 passengers and pulled up to the gate, said the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing but offered the following account:

One passenger got out of his seat to fetch his belongings from the overhead compartment before the crew had given permission. Mr. Slater instructed the man to remain seated. The passenger defied him. Mr. Slater approached and reached the passenger just as he pulled down his luggage, which struck Mr. Slater in the head.

Mr. Slater asked for an apology. The passenger instead cursed at him. Mr. Slater got on the plane’s public address system and cursed out all aboard. Then he activated the inflatable evacuation slide at service exit R1, launched himself off the plane, an Embraer 190, ran to the employee parking lot and left the airport in a car he had parked there.

In a statement, JetBlue said it was working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to investigate the incident.

“At no time was the security or safety of our customers or crew members at risk,” the company said, declining to answer other questions about the incident.

A MySpace page appearing to belong to Mr. Slater indicates that he has been a flight attendant since 1990. His LinkedIn entry says he has worked for JetBlue since January 2008.

In addition to serving as chairman of JetBlue’s uniform redesign committee, the LinkedIn entry says, Mr. Slater serves on the airline’s in-flight values committee.

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

It would have been better if he had pitched the passenger down the slide.

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

This is what happens when you don't close your flight plan while taxiing.

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

Ohhhhh.... ROADHOUSE!

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

I would have LOVED to see something like that happen.

Why do some passengers or people in general think they can do whatever they want when they want. Why are some people above the rules or everyone else?

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

A quick call to the flight deck to have this passenger met for disregarding crew member instruction/placard instruction for the seatbelt, threating by cursing at the FA and possibly getting physical with the bag would have given this passenger what he deserved. Instead the FA got arrested, bummer... Should've been level headed about it.

Tell me about a time when... :p

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

I just clicked to find out what a Disp was. I was underwhelmed.

I was hoping it was "discipline". "This is the third time this month we've caught you sneaking from the liquor cart!" "Oh yeah!? FU. *glug glug glug* *clunk* *WHIIIISHHHHHH* Seeya, suckers!" I also like the mental image of the guy just running like hell across the ramp for the employee parking lot. I think we've all felt like doing that once or twice.

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

Lol, when I read the email about it when it happened, I was wondering if the "intentionally deployed the R1 slide" was a typo.

I pictured this being acted out by Homer Simpson, and then it all came together...

He ran all the way to the employee parking lot? Don't you have to ride the airtrain to get there?

Re: Jetblue Flight Attendant Uses Emergency Slide to Escape

He took the airtrain over along with two beers from the front galley according to NYCAviation haha.

Sticking it to the man....All of the management team at my company are former JetBluer's, and most definitely remember this guy. I just want to know what kind of beer he grabbed on the way out....

August 9, 2010- A frustrated JetBlue flight attendant allegedly fled his plane via emergency chute -- beer in hand -- after getting into a fight with a passenger and then cursing out the entire cabin over a loudspeaker.

The JetBlue flight from Pittsburgh arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport shortly after noon. As the plane was taxiing to the gate, one of the passengers apparently got out of his seat to grab a bag from an overhead compartment.
The flight attendant walked over to tell him he had to sit down. The two reportedly got into an argument and somehow the flight attendant got hit in the head with either the bag or the compartment door.

At that point, the flight attendant got on the loud speaker, told those aboard to "go f*** themselves," grabbed a beer from the galley, deployed the chute and ran into the terminal. His car was parked at an employee lot and he drove home.
The attendant was arrested at his nearby home about a half an hour later by Port Authority police.

Steven Slater, 38, of the Belle Harbor section of Queens, N.Y., has been charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, according to a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which runs the New York-area airports. The case is still being investigated but will be referred to the Queens District Attorney's office.
JetBlue would not say how long Slater has worked for the airline, but his LinkedIn profile says he worked as a flight attendant since 1994, when he worked for the former Business Express. He also worked for the now-defunct TWA and for Delta, then apparently had a job as the Burberry accessories shop manager at Bloomingdale's.

According to the profile, at JetBlue he is a member of the "inflight values committee" and is the chairman of the "uniform redesign committee."
